it’s just like any other T56 I’ve had.
except the stock GTO shifter sucks

Did you have the aftermarket Cobra Shifter on your old one? I’m pretty sure you can bolt that short throw onto the T56 you have now and it will work fine… The guy that I know did that on his and it looks damn good and works well.
