Yes, both candidates have missteps, but every time I hear it, the context is that it fundamentally proves that he is “out of touch” with the economy which I think is silly, and not worth being dragged through the mud. Its about one good sound-bite and beating the dead horse until it turns in to a fairy. That is what annoys me about politics and campaign speeches in general. It is perfect for playing to the masses of idiots that will do the majority of the voting in this country though without actually digging in and understanding the issues and viewpoints themselves.
Debates and media circuses influence voters for sure, but hardly reflect what is really important.

You hear it over and over because you’re paying attention. They repeat it b/c a lot of the times people who attend a rally, watch a debate are tuning in for the first time.

I just got back from lunch in rural GA. “At least McCain knows how to lead the military, Obama’s best friend is a terrorist… I don’t want him raising our taxes.”
