That makes sense until you consider that once the addition inside of the parenthesis are taken care of, the parenthesis no longer exist. They are simply a symbol for multiplication. If you do the addition first without applying the 2 outside to it during or directly after, you are IGNORING THE DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTIES of MULTIPLICATION (sp?) ---

when i see the problem i work it out as so: 48/2(9+3) 48/2(12) 24(12) 288 no distribution necessary. we arent finding a variable here… ---
