Was playing with some siqqq bikes on the xxx. After two pulls I check over my gauges and see my oil pressure dwindling into the teens… So I shut down, got a tow home, and this is the damage.

4g63s are prone to oil pump failures at higher rpm. I also think that my oil weight had something to do with it.

So, basically need a new crank + machine work. Meh.

Aluminum rods in a street engine?

Doesn’t look to bad. Crankshaft will probably clean up with a .010 turn on the rod and mains. Might want to consider a blue printed oil pump

Coated bearings might not be a bad idea

Yeah those Buschur 2.0 long rod engines have the option for aluminum rods. They seem to be really good rods though but they aren’t really “re-useable” once they go. Paul had to have a new one put in when his oil pump went. If I were you I’d just send it to Buschur and have him go over it. They usually help you out.

That sucks. Sorry to see.

The only time I’ve seen oil pumps fail in 4G63’s is when there is too much base tension from the tensioner pulley on the timing belt. As rpm increases so does the tension as the auto tensioner extends to take up the normal slack. When there is too much base tension sometimes the gear shafts can be pulled out of alignment which puts pressure on their bores. You will see this if you take the oil pump apart. Opposite sides of the cover will be worn into by the gears and the bores in which the drive gear and driven gear (balance shaft gear) ride will be sloppy and wiped.

Sometimes you can hear when a belt is too tight. You will hear a whirring noise from the timing cover. Usually a good indication of too much tension. 4G63s are finicky engines. Mechanically speaking, these engines need to have everything in sync to really stay together for a long time.

Good luck. I’m personally a big fan of Accusump for these reasons. It’s relatively cheap insurance and many times can help catch these problems before a bearing is damaged. Also, 20w50.

Yes, aluminum rods in a street engine. At the power levels I make, a rebuild is probably in order every season which gives me the opportunity to inspect the rods frequently. In addition, the Evo pistons are quite light compared to SBC/LSx shiz which helps with longevity… Lots of people run them daily in the Evo community.

The crankshaft is garbage. It’s turned .010 over already, and if I were to go an additional .010; the induction hardened coating would be gone.

Meh.

I fully intend on having GRP inspect the rods. I’m confident 3/4 did not spin bearings. The fourth one looks like it began, but the dowel held the bearing mostly in place.

I’ve heard plenty of stories of loading the belt too tightly. However, this motor was built by buschur and assembled by STM, who I’m sure have done probably 100’s of timing belts and would know the proper tension. Typically a side loaded oil pump will start to erode it’s “journal” if you want to call it that; the gears just simply sheared… I do plan on running an accusump in the future. Seems like cheap insurance.

Ouch. I was wondering if this was your Evolution. I’m getting an Accusump myself.

Just remember that if you get an Accusump it buys you a few more seconds after the pump fails before pressure drops, but if you don’t know something is wrong until you see oil pressure drop on your gauge, the Accusump hasn’t helped. If you get an audio or visual warning from a bang or smoke or something before pressure drops, then an Accusump can buy you a few seconds to get the engine shut down. In this case the pump probably failed mid pull and you’re not going to hear a heard of elephants over most high HP Evos.

Agreed. This is why I was always a fan of Defi gauges with warnings etc.

FWIW when my pump failed alex, i only needed one new rod from GRP. dave tore down the whole motor and it ended up only having one spun bearing, everything else was inspected/checked and was ok. however mine had more catastrophic damage since my pump seized so bad it just SHUT the motor off at 7000rpm during a pull on the dyno. my timing jumped and bent half the valves in my head too, it sucks but thats what happens with high HP cars.

I agree. Accusump seems like a good idea only if oil starvation was the cause of this incident…Which I don’t think it was.

I was thinking if I had a warning when the car hit below 40PSI I would have just shut down the car and things might not have been so ugly inside. Oh well.

Hopefully things aren’t so bad. I’m sending the rods to GRP for inspection and repair. I also shot Dave a PM (Lets see if he even gets back to me lol.) in regards to his pistons. I seem to have excessive skirt wear so I’m not entirely sure whats up with that.

Could be because of the debris floating in the oil after the accident. Either way, I’m basically doing a full rebuild at this point. The block and new crank were dropped off at Klispies today for inspection and repair.
