# Aircraft Stripper

I have some aluminum shift paddles that came powder coated a dull silver and i want them raw, so i want to remove the powder coat… The aircraft paint stripper that they sell @ pep boys, will that remove the powder coat pretty effectivly? how does it leave the surface… i am going to polish the paddles when i am done stripping them, i just want a semi gloss look to them… any ideas?

It will work fine and will not harm the surface. I have used it on Aluminum wheels before and as long as it is not shit underneath already they should come out fine. But odds are, if they are painted, thire is shit aluminum underneath.

drive teh car @ an autoX or turn around a corner and try to click a shift paddle and let me know how easy it is to hit one of the small stock ones… the stock paddles are attached to the wheel not to the column so when you rotate the wheel and the paddle you want is @ the 6 oclock position it is impossible to hit it, its especially annoying when driving around town and turning a street corner… these are MUCH larger and allow you to hit the paddle easier… :roll2:

The question is why are you shifting in the middle of a corner?
-If you are cornering at the limit you don’t want to upset the car with weight transfer by shifting.
-And if you are not cornering at the limit (i.e. before turn in or at exit) you should easily be able to position your hands.
Aircraft stripper works great on normal paint, not sure about a good powder coat. It’s like $5.00 a can, try it. If it works it works, if it doesn’t it doesn’t. I would just scuff them with 400 grit and rattle can myself.

its not so much @ autoX, i usually just go 1-2 and leave it there
its driving around town where its a PITA the car doesnt automatically shift down to 1 until your below 5mph so you have to manually wack it to get it to downshift… or thruway exit ramps and upshifting when turning right puts the paddle in your lap its not a huge deal… just one of the annoying things ive found after owning the car for 2 months…
and yea, ive used aircraft stripper on paint before and it was great… still kinda wondering how it will work on PC as i dont fee like getting these blasted, i guess i could always just use some green surface prep discs…

I believe he said he is up-shifting while accelerating through a turn and the paddle ends up hard to reach.

hold the wheel at 10-2… .now turn the wheel 90 degrees to the right… now the upshift button is in your lap so on long corners especially onramps to the thruway you need to upshift if you are pushing it… especially if you are going from 2-3 while merging

no brake fluid doesn’t touch PC.
Aircraft stripper works fine and it doesn’t harm aluminum…afterall aluminum is what the majority of aircrafts are constructed of.

It should work fine on PC…but if they are anodized then u need to use easy off oven cleaner

definetly PC, its a rough finish… i actually may anodize them black and then clean the one edge down to bare metal, but thats for another time
