I’m disappointed he doesn’t know one of his own quotes. Fry, computer programs can’t reason. It’s one of the major hurdles of AI. You can however, teach it a bunch of facts, and have it use logic to determine a response. The logic has to be explicit though, and it needs a source for facts. In this case, the logic is based on questions. So the program likely looks for keywords and patterns to determine the question type, and then once the question type is determined, it can look at some facts and figure out how to answer. It likely just regurgitates the facts. ---

It uses tf/idf to categorize the initial question into one of 10 categories. Within that category, it runs tf/idf a second round, to find the best matched question, and then says the answer for that question. Tf/idf is a weighted keyword search, so words that appear less are weighted higher than common words that appear all over the place.
