The “Lucifer Principle” is freelance journalist Bloom’s theory that evil-which manifests in violence, destructiveness and war-is woven into our biological fabric. A corollary is that evil is a by-product of nature’s strategy to move the world to greater heights of organization and power as national or religious groups follow ideologies that trigger lofty ideals as well as base cruelty. In an ambitious, often provocative study, Bloom applies the ideas of sociobiology, ethology and the “killer ape” school of anthropology to the broad canvas of history, with examples ranging from Oliver Cromwell’s reputed pleasure in killing and raping to Mao Tse-tung’s bloody Cultural Revolution, India’s caste system and Islamic fundamentalist expansion. Bloom says Americans suffer “perceptual shutdown” that blinds them to the United States’ downward slide in the pecking order of nations. His use of concepts like pecking order, memes (self-replicating clusters of ideas), the “neural net” or group mind of the social “superorganism” seem more like metaphors than explanatory tools.

> The Shockwave Rider is a science fiction novel by John Brunner, originally published in 1975. It is notable for its hero's use of computer hacking skills to escape pursuit in a dystopian future, and for the coining of the word "worm" to describe a program that propagates itself through a computer network. It also introduces the concept of a Delphi pool, perhaps derived from the RAND Corporation's Delphi method – a futures market on world events which bears close resemblance to DARPA's co The ti...

The Da Vinci Code & Angels and Demons. Don’t bother reading more of Dan Brown’s stuff. I quickly found out that they were all the same story with a different setting.

Michael Crichton stuff is always good. State of Fear was the last one I read. Very interesting global warming fictional scenario type stuff.

I have liked almost all of the Crichton stuff I’ve read, which is almost all of his books.

As for Dan Brown, I liked Angels & Demons better than the Da Vinci Code.

Nice, I’ll have to look into that. Thanks Fox.

Also, Patrick Robinson lays out a good techno-thriller too. Currently elbow-deep in Robert Ludlum’s _The Bourne Ultimatum._

I guess it all depends on what subject you consider “a good read.”
