# Any MBA students/graduates here?

St. Bonaventure 2006 Regular MBA in Finance and Accounting
It has helped with promotion considerations recently. I enjoyed the classes more since they were more work focused.
I went straight after undergrad. I was offered the graduate assistant program so I couldn’t pass up the deal financially. I understand why people say to wait, but working full time and taking classes has to be a pain so I don’t second guess my decision.
I was in classes where people came into class at 6pm after working a 9 to 5, and struggled on test. Where I woke up at noon and studied from 1 - 3, worked out, cramed for a couple more hours and aced the test.

The EMBA class I’m interviewing to get into meets alternating Fridays/Saturdays all day; so while it’s a struggle, I worked 30-50 hours per week while at RIT for my BS; this should be a lot easier than that, other than I now have a family.

I have a friend doing that at Mich State and it is working well. Definitely a sacrifice, but he thinks it is worth it. Plus his work chips in towards it.
Another comment I will add is people ask if you have an MBA, not necessarily where it is from. If you got a top 25 school then it is probably relevant or if it is local. Ie Canisius grads hiring other Canisius grads.

One thing to keep in mind with the EMBA programs is they are full of people who likely get their way all day at work and are not used to accountability/being challenged. It’s all luck of draw but sometimes there is far too much ego for one classroom.

Interesting thought; honestly didn’t think about it like that, but it makes complete sense; it’s essentially a MBA for Alpha-Type personalities.
Should be able to deal with it though; The place I work at has a lot of people with a HORRIBLE case of “but that’s how it’s always been done”; and a growing handful of people going, “yea, but it’s not right; we keep doing it that way the FDA will close the doors” so there’s lots of very stubborn back and forth. Being a Program Manager in this environment is a lot of setting up strategic manipulations by putting the right mix of people into a room, lighting the fuse, and keeping the discussion on track while the cock fight ensues.

The EMBA/PMBA programs at the University of Utah just got bumped in rankings from Bloomberg; #25 in the US, and #33 in the world!

Late to the party but what do you actually plan to do with it? Specifically. Not just “management”. These days (esp. lower level, non full time) MBAs are a dime a dozen. They are not a ticket punch, and if they only reason you are going is because you’re burned out on your current career path then you’re going for the wrong reasons. Is there a specific job in your current company that you’ve been told you don’t qualify for w/o it? Are you looking to change your career with it, or just use it to move further up the organizational structure?

Walter - combo of both of your last sentences; I want to move out of the engineering side and more into the business development (both domestic and international), and acquisitions sides of the company; and “up the food chain” at the same time.

Update -
Just got back from the first sequestered “Intensive Week” on Friday. Completed 2 Half-Classes in 5 days, mentally exhausted already. 8am - 9:30pm Mon-Thursday, and 9-4 on Friday. It is almost impossible to describe the week, except that it was intense, mentally draining, very eye-opening, but a LOT of fun.
Real weekly classes start in 2 weeks; and I’ve already got a good load of homework. The upper-classman were at their 2nd intensive week when we were up there, most said it takes 2-4 hours per day (not including class day) to keep up with the homework and do well in the classes. Looks like it’s going to be a crazy 21 months.
