# anyone here work at the DMV?

I am buying a car in Buffalo, already have insurance arranged with progressive, they know i only have an Ontario DL.
I have valid residency in NYS with tons of mail to prove, that is all i needed for insurance to go through.
My concern is that i buy the car and i show up to the DMV with insurance and the title and that they wont let me register the car.
I cannot call the DMV because apparently phones dont exist there…
Anyone here work at the DMV an can provide insight?

you need at least 6 points of id from the US, insurance card, title, lots of $$$$

You need a passport and a drivers license. Bringing a birth certificate would be a good idea as well. Insurance is nothing and easy to get. Having insurance doesnt guarantee you anything at DMV.
I would bring the following.
Passport
Drivers License
Birth Certificate
Bill of Sale from previous owner (hand written is fine-must include vin # and both names and be signed)
Scannable Insurance Card (with barcode)
Title of vehicle (Make sure there are no LIENS recorded on the title)
Go to the info desk FIRST.
Tell them you just bought a USED car and need to TITLE and REGISTER it.
They will hand you a YELLOW tax form. [DTF-802](http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/forms/dtf802_01.pdf)
They will hand you a White Title and Registration form. [MV-82](http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/forms/mv82.pdf)
Or you can print out the above forms (double sided) and fill them out before you go in 🙂

Actually this is the page for registration ID requirements(not much is different):

You get 2 point for Canadian license. Do you have Us pay stub ? that and a wegmans card together is another two.
If you have a title in your name that’s another two…
Us utility bill is 1
US bank ATM card is 1

i have credit card statements and a variety of other mail that verifies my address. no US pay stubs though… but i can get one.

well utility bill will get you another point. Us college, anything ?
Edit: Maybe you can get border guys to put a visa and I94 in your canadian passport -not usually necessary ,but consulate might be able to hook you up, that’ll be good for 3 points

i can go get a wegmans cards… what the hell is that anyways?
if progressive has it on their quoting system that a Canadian license is a valid option then there has to be a way of registereing the car like that… i know people who have done it in other states when they move there.
i’ll drop by on saturday i think.

It is a supermarket check cashing card as far as DMV is concerned.
as far as visa:
Canadians don’t need visa to visit US, but that doesn’t have to mean that you can’t get one. Now if you have a Canadian passport with a US visa in it, then at the border they will give you an I-94 form, to document your entry (after begin super confused I suspect).
Canadian passport+Us visa+ I-94 = 3 points.

yeah i know, i’m hittin it up…
but i imagine it gets super busy on saturday… government sucks everywhere.
