> I believe that if your engine wasnt turbo than the ports are not set up for boost. I know some people used to supercharge them… I just remember reading something that the ports play a big role in the engine like the cam does in a piston motor. He should find a couple more rotorys to bolt together. They are supposed to just bolt together back to front so you can make the engine bigger

:rofl

it’s not that easy

:rofl

and one word for turboing the n/a 13b-

BANG.

You said cheap… not reliable. It would last a few months in an RX7. Auto trans it is then lol

The 12a, the 13b and the renesis motor are shit, take it out and put in an LS1.
Sorry i’ll be more helpful. The rotary is a pretty shitty motor, think two-stroke characteristics here, very inneficient and pollutes like crazy. You can peripherally port the casings of the engine to increase airflow through the motor. Sometimes you have to weld extra metal to the casing to port correctly. These are not conventional type motors, the rotary is the crankshaft, pistons etc. spinning in a casing. The casing port size dictates the amount of air the motor can theoretically suck in. They hate turbos, let me stress the importance of this…detonation of any kind in a rotary motor will crack the apex seals on the rotor. (think piston ring only much harder to fix). So if you turbo them-fuel and spark must be kept in check at all times, the same with boost levels. With all that said see above comment about swapping the LS1.

P.s. just sell the rotary to some british car owner, they love to swap those things into sprites and mg’s

The only easy or cheap thing to do is to keep it stock and buy a different car. Some sort of engine swap would be cool. Maybe a Mazda FE 2.0L At least it would still be all Mazda… good luck finding one tho

I was thinking that but they are probably pricey… Mazdaspeed Miata or Protege could also be a donor but Im not sure how reliable they are. Never really heard of anyone building those.

well his origional plan was to drop a 3.8 out of a F-body in it, and he was gonna have me create a turbo kit ofr it…he wants to run my same setup, but in his rx-7 which would make a pretty nasty, quick RX-7

but i was just trying to find out some more info on these 13b’s before we went pulling shit out of his…We both would have been irritated if we dropped in another motor and found out later that we could make nearly the same power as the motor that was in there.

Get a 5.3L for cheap and turn the manifolds around and make a kit like yours with a 67-70mm turbo. The 5.3 loves boost because of its lower compression (9.5:1) and it has smaller pistons than a LS1 that resist knock better. Plust the iron block is stronger. There are people who slide in a ZO6 cam and make over 600whp on stock 5.3Ls. The 3.8L would be cool too.

This is Parish’s latest project… You know the guy with the blue 10second Chevy Pickup

Rotarys make better bombs than powerful motors. Forget making power, you can get some h.p. but no tourque and tons of headaches.

I think we come to the conclusion that the rotory is impracticle in a number of ways

1. replacement parts availability
2. aftermarket parts cost and hp per dollar value
3. ease of fabrication or cheap hp
4. Reliability is in question especially at possible target power goals

If he doesnt mind fabrication then I guess an engine swap is in order.

1. SB chevy engine swap: Its overdone but I wanted to mention it. probably need standalone fuel management or carb :idiots but good potential
2. 4.3L S10 engine swap: Similar to SB Chevy many aftermarket parts interchangeable, but smaller package could be fun with FI
3. Camaro/Firebird 3800 swap: Some aftermarket and would be great with FI as Boostin Camaro already knows
4. LS1 swap: huge aftermarket and power potential N/A or FI, lightweight all aluminum, $3,500 for engine and trans
5. 5.3L LS swap: Significantly cheaper than LS1 weighs 60#s more but similar potential and aftermarket to LS1, Loves FI
6. JDM Mazda MX6 GT swap (FE 2.0L): Good foundation for FI, but low availability
7. Mazdaspeed 6/3 2.3L Turbo swap: Great foundation for power. Fabrication,Cost and availability concerns

My vote would be for a 3800 or 5.3L swap with FI

3 or 4 people I know in rochester have done the LS swap in 2nd and 3rd gen RX7s, apparently its not very hard nor expensive.

yah…the 3.8’s CR is 9:2:1…thats why we have guys boosting over 22psi on a bone stock motor for over a year now with no issues…only issue is, the tranny’s are the weakest link.

The 3.8s are 9.2 the 4.3s are 9.0 and the 5.3 is 9.5 but with aluminum heads. The most expensive thing about the LS1 swap is the engine. $3500+ for engine and trans. You can get a 5.3 for well less than half that and it can be bored out to a 5.7.
I was looking at a 3rd gen RX7 with a LS6 swap but it was a bit out of my price range but it would have been nice
