Okay, I bought a remote starter / alarm / remote door opener combo unit form Can Tire for $129 (good deal I thought). Then I shopped around for install prices, and Future shop was $220… lowest price. I went to other place, and they wouldn’t install it if it wasn’t from their shop. Understandable. Oh CT wanted to charg $312 for the install.

So on sat, wiring installed, but brain is dead. Go to CT and exchange it. As I’m driving, I notice the shift point are higher on the auto… uh oh. Thought “maybe car is cold.”

Sun, Future shop finishes install. Alarm works great, remote starter is great, unlocks, etc. Drive car off. Tranny is shifting funny, then drops into Failsafe mode! I take care back (2 minutes) and tell the guy. (two different guys isntalled it. One on Sat, and one on sun to finish it off.)

He’s baffled, but he’s going to call around.

Talked to manager yesterday, said I’m pissed I can’t drive my car (sticking in 2nd gear sometimes, etc.) I’m leaving it there tonight so that Wed morning, they can fix it.

If they can’t fix it, should I sue their asses?! (dont mind me, I’m just bitter.)

Ah well, just wanted to vent. What do you guys think the problem could be? I personally think that they grounded to something, and the speed sensor or rev sensor is messed up up, because when I take it out of Failsafe, it constantly shifts at a higher RPM. Sometime it doesnt even shift. Oh man, I can’t wait for a manual swap.

ARGGGG

i would sue, or @ least keep bitching and go to higher management until your car is working PERFECTLY
talk to them in this mindset 'u gave them your precious car and payed extra to install an expensive product professionally, and they broke your car and gave it back to you"

I know… and I’m paying dearly for it.

All the other shops wouldn’t install stuff they don’t sell, and CT charged too much.

Let’s hope things go well… otherwise I’m gonna make sure that the store will pay to replace/fix the tranny.

Grrrrrr.

i work at futureshop,

the installation is guarenteed, ask to talk to the manager or ask for the phone number for futureshop HQ, they have deep pockets and do not want trouble, they will help you out. Trust me, or go to another futureshop, it is only certain shops that don’t know what they are talking about, for example i got my alarm/keyless entry done in kitchener and the guy was an expert in nissan’s. so there are many options before sueing

AFAIK, ever since CT tried to ‘fix’ my bro’s brakes, I’ve lost total respect
for their mechanics (just the one at Shoppers World Brampton).

Anywho…

I really can’t diagnose renman’s problem, but I can say this for anyone
wanting electronics installed (stereo/alarm/etc.). I’m not sure if there is
such a thing but it’s prolly best to ask the shop to show any certificates
indicating they’re trained at what they do, and maybe even proofs of their
past work (most audio shops will have albums of their work).

A word of advice to those posting here; Either try and help out renman
or don’t post anything at all. There’s no need to put him down for his
misfortune. I got powers now ya know!

Edit:
S. Ebrahimi, hate to say it, but ADAM’s got a valid point. You get what
you pay for. And I’m sure he didn’t mean to be disrespectful.

They _fix_ cars at Canadian Tire? What?

The mechanics at CT are some of the worst anywhere. You’re getting your car worked on by interns… you probably have the same mechanical knowledge/inclination yourself.

Oh yeah, and remote car starters are crap. They waste gas, poison the environment (not that anybody cares) and cause your exhaust system to corrode more quickly.

I’m sure that very well depends on the CT you go to. When I speak of
bad experience at my CT, I don’t speak of all CTs throughout the nation.
Then again, I don’t know what kind of qualifications are required by CT
in comparision to other shops. If you really wanna judge a shop’s
credibility, ask for certificats/history/etc.

 Explain. What’s more to a remote starter then to start your
engine? If by that you mean letting your car idle/warm up while you get
ready, I don’t exactly how this is in anyway different then starting the
car yourself.

ADAM is one of our longest standing members and is responsible for much of what SON is today. He runs one of the fastest cars in SOLO 1, the fastest car in the club and one of the fastest SOHC KAT’s in Canada and probably North America. He is also the founder and proprietor of Ontario Race Fabrication Ltd. a membership based garage that includes some of the most prominent members of our club as members. That’s who he is and that’s what gives him the right to comment on a newb’s poor choice of installer.

I don’t understand, so basically what your saying is that if I was a good contributing member and had a car that does/did great on track and on top of that own a garage. I can say what ever I want to any member? Not bad, maybe I should just be like him. Look the point is I don’t need anyone else telling me what and who he is; I can see that from his web page. “who the hell are u to talk like” was harsh I admit, but it predestined no disrespect to him, I just don’t understand why he would post a reply like that. And no I don’t think and KNOW renman dint not make a poor choice having futureshop installing his alram.

sorry to come off sounding harsh…but it always bothers me that people bitch about how an install goes like crap…while in the same breath say

“Then I shopped around for install prices, and Future shop was $220… lowest price. I went to other place, and they wouldn’t install it if it wasn’t from their shop. Understandable. Oh CT wanted to charg $312 for the install.”

where maybe the extra $92 dollars would have stopped this whole issue dead in the tracks…

its a case of the friggen walmart syndrom…and its a cancer of our society…it really is…everyone shops for the lowest price on the “product”

BUT FAILS TO REMEMBER THE MOST IMPORTANT THING “TOTAL COST OF OWNERSHIP”

what does that mean…

well…lets say i buy a widget from a store…it has the lowest rock bottom price…great…i buy it and leave with it…

what if i have problems with it?
what if its busted?
what about warrenty?
can they install it?
are they qualified?
can i ask anyone for help with it?

basically it comes down to service…

here is a question…if you were going to the doctor to get a pace maker installed…and you had to “shop around” would you base your pace maker install decision…ON PRICE ALONE!!!

thats my beef…

you ALWAYS get what you pay for…

sorry to sound like a prick on this issue…but thats my belief …

its like if you buy a 49.99 crappy tire tire…and go 150mph on it…and when it busts you get all pissed that it broke…i say too bad you get what you pay for…thats why pirelli P zeros are 300+ a tire…

flame on if you want…

Can we keep it on topic please.

Future SHop is a respectull company with a good reputatiojn and solid CS principles. I’ve dealt with them on a corporate level a few times and I was very impressed with their concern and the way they handle their custumers.
I’m sure if they are responsible for the damage they will take care of it. It may take a little bit of running around but unfortunately that’s the way it is with most major corporations.

As per the “cheapest price” argument, it may not necesarily be true.
For example, a clutch install at Canadian tire was quoted at 1100$ including an OEM clutch and repolish of the fly wheel. Pretty pricey.

The same job can be done at a local mechanic for less than half the price.
As valid as your argument is regarding the product it does not apply on the labour. Installations are generally a matter of how much time it takes, because the parts are allready purchased, it comes down to how much the shop/ store chooses to charge per hour. In which case a hifgher rate does by no means mean a better quality job.

Good luck with your car, keep us posted.

</div>

First off, I didn’t mean to create a hectic bantering. I’m sure Adam didn’t mean it disrespectfully, and thanks to S. Eb for watching my back. That being said…

The point of me shopping around for the cheapest install is to find the cheapest qualified installers. I could have gone to $99 dollar shop where they do everything and more, but did I? No. The Future Shop installers had certificates and they were qualified. Trust me, I looked into their office.

The problem is still not known. I picked up my car today from them, and unfortunately, the head guy said he’s not sure what it could be, but I should take it to Nissan and get them to diagnose it. I thought that made perfect sense and got their store manager to sign to the the following: if the transmission trouble could not have been from the install, then I would cover the cost myself (me). That’s not exactly what I wrote, but it shows the intent. When I talked to the store manager, he was a nice guy, very apologetic, so was the head install guy.

As for the total cost of ownership, this is a one shot deal. I don’t plan on maintaining a remote starter and alarm. I buy it, I install, I forget it. That’s how they are supposed to work. If it was a car I bought, then yeah, I realize that total cost of ownership is brought in to consideration, but with electronics? Tell me, how many of you buy a home stereo, and think about maintanance? I thought so.

Basically, I’m pretty happy with their customer service. I didn’t act like a stupid know it all customer, and they didn’t act like pricks. I dropped my car off to Nissan Agincourt tonight, and tomorrow, they are going to look at it.

Then they’ll call me at work. Best case scenario:

Dealer: “Ren, your tranny is F$#$ed up. We need to replace it.”
Ren (to Future Shop): " They need to replace my tranny."
Future Shop: “okay, we’ll pay anything”
Ren to Dealer :“Drop in a manual.”

ULTIMATE SCENARIO
Ren to Dealer: “Drop in the black-top baby. oh yeah.”

Either way, we’ll see what happens. Thanks for the support. Do you know what its like to go from my car, to transit? damn.

And I may be newb to Nissan, but not to cars in general. And I’m relatively old here. Let’s just say over 25…

Ah well, this is what cames with car ownership…
