# Automotive illustrations: would you pay for something like this?

I’m curious, as many of us are here on NYspeed due to our interest in cars…and most likely have some attachment to what we drive, would you ever pay for a drawing or rendering of your car? Here’s a few examples of two drawings (not mine); the first being a simple, yet expessive pencil sketch and the second a more developed rendering:
Again, I’m curious if you would ever pay for a service like this, and how much would you be willing to pay for each type of drawing shown above.

It’s cool, but not something i would pay for. But again, I’m not the kind of guy who loves his car, I just want to know what the car can do for me… It’s usually like a one night stand for me and cars.

I think it is pretty damn cool. I would most definitely hang up 3-4 of them in my house. Probably my friends cars and my own…C5. GTO, Cobra, //M3, maybe a few of my muscle car favs.
I wouldn’t want to pay too much though because I’m a cheap bastard. I’d probably want to keep it under $50 each if possible.
Do you draw them?

Depending on the price I do like the renderings for my basement or garage. I couldn’t see paying much more than 50 though.

i can understand old classics and having it done for those. maybe someone that restored there car over years and years and now wants a drawing of the finished product.

I’d only buy it if I had a unique car. Like some kind of crazy drag queen with custom-designed body panels to fit in my massive turbos, or something.
Otherwise, you’re paying for a drawing that you could probably find for free, if someone else with a car the same year as yours had paid for it and posted it online. :lol:

I’ve seen several people on forums do these in type of things in the past. I think they are neat if you are really in to your ride.
I hope the people that keep saying $50 are joking.
Depending on the time involved pick a rate that makes you feel like it was time well spent. Often times the people I see doing it are also doing it to get experience and build a portfolio, so that comes in to the equation. Oh, and the list is instaly 400 people long and no one can ever keep up.

Yes, I do…however I’ve never done a drawing for hire, that’s kindof what I’m loosely probing for here. If this were to become a business endeavor, I’d be in contact with the mods.
The first sketch I posted is something that I could duplicate without any investment of tools. To do the second one would require me to buy either a Cintique monitor (one that you draw on), or a Wacom tablet…as well as some software. If this turned into something with some decent demand I’d feel more comfortable about making the investment into this equipment.

Not completely. The idea of this is that you are paying someone to put together a piece of artwork of YOUR car. Good luck finding an existing drawing that matches…not saying it won’t happen but I’d think the chances are slim here.

Ha! I hope that’s a joke…and if it isn’t I’d like to see your photoshop filtered rendering. Photoshop cannot duplicate the creative aspect that an artist can provide.

That was the next level of rendering that would be offered. However, people pay upwards of $5000 for his work…which I’m sure has a lot to do with his name, but those illustrations he does are quite nice.

For me, this wouldn’t be geared to a portfolio as my education and professional work covers those needs. This is more about making a a few bucks on the side doing something I enjoy doing.
To those who have made the comment of “not pay more than $50”…are you speaking of the first drawing or the second drawing?

If it is an one-off rendering of my personal vehicle like the second drawing I would be willing to pay more; but if it is just a quick sketch like the first(even though it is good) I wouldn’t think it would be worth that much.

Something like the first one could be done in a matter of an hour or so. The one posted was used as a prelim sketch that developed into the rendering.
If I were to do just the first sketch for someone, I’d probably only charge like $20 or so…which for an hourly rate is insanely low if you really think about it.

How large are they?
Would you actually mail the drawing to the buyer?
If so I could be used as your test subject if you want. I’ll have to dig up some photos, but they are really just almost stock looking 04 gto, 98 cobra, my 97 c5, and a 96 //M3.
I would really like them to be colored though as they are all red. which is funny because we are all friends.
Keep me updated on what your thinking of doing. Maybe mail the actual drawings, scan a digital copy to keep for records and to use for others. Then do a digital colored copy.
If it is easy enough, you could offer copies of people’s car for cheaper or just color edited copied for a better price.
