The only reason I can see is seeing how the SR is a Torqueless wonder
the longer runners before the turbo aid in the increase of torque.

Except that it does’t utilize the full potential of the exhaust gas because it cools so much before reaching the turbo…

So thermal expansion plays a much lesser roll in spooling the snail…

Drag car status max…

The engine better look like that and perform like that if it’s a drag car…

It is ceramic coated and isn’t _that_ long.

It’s not like the turbo’s out back where the muffler is.

I think it will work, though forum is defenatly over function in this guys car.

No but the first couple feet are crucial… he’s taking that away…

Thermal expansion is just as much a product of time as it is heat release… something thats just be combusted takes time to expand, and the first few fractions of a second make a big difference…

Agreed…

Sorry to intervene here but just because the exhaust gases arent as heated/hot as they are closer to the manifold doesnt mean they dont spool the turbo as well.

The reason for the long headers is to have a quicker spooling turbo. How you ask? Because of the longer radius bends the exhaust gases are able to gain more velocity rather than small tight angles that slow down the gases.

Every serious drag race car has a header design like this.

What drag cars are we talking about here…

If you talk to ADAM H he will also point out that it’s thermal expansion, NOT gas velocity that spools a turbo for the most part…

I remember him saying it in one of his posts… and unless he is wrong, or I remembered wrong then whatever…

If we are talking naturally aspirated Drag cars with long headers, again the principles are much different…

Im talking about turbo drag cars, NA cars are completely different.

Have a look at every NHRA, NDRA turbo drag Honda, Toyota, etc. They all run ridiculously long headers to promote quick spool up on those massive turbos.

Im not saying your theory is wrong just saying that the principal of hot exhaust gases cooling and not being able to spool a turbo as well on those long headers is false. Those headers actually help spool a large turbo better than the shorter ones.

I’m not sure they “gain” velocity…I think it is more a function of not “loosing as much” veloicty.

And your comment about heat not spooling a turbo is not quite right. I agree that it is one factor in spool…

For example, if you take two setups and all is equal except the heat in the runners… the hotter will perferm better.

I’m with Bob on this one… The heat plays the biggest factor in spooling the turbo, not velocity. People even heat wrap their headers to spool better. And length = better? WTF? Yea, your bends hurt flow, but so does length! And that pic has both bends and length. Sure they may not be as sharp, but combined with the length, I’m pretty sure they’ll come together for some shitty flow.

Yup, I thermal coated my manifold for that reason. The heat differential between the exhaust gas and the ambient air is huge! it will slow down the gases.
