Saw this on NICO and thought it was kinda neat. Since not all of us live on Son everyday and many dont have the money for in depth builds its cool to see where your car started off and where it is today.

It’s a Full Race pre-production manifold.  
I don’t think this design ever reached the production stage.

I assumed that it was stainless and brought it to an offshore/shipyard welder that I know.  
He fixed it with stainless rod, but it’s actually made out of an interesting assortment of materials.

The flanges are magnetic, and therefore not stainless.  
The tubes aren’t Magnetic, but they didn’t weld like regular stainless usually does.  
He said it was acting like a duplex or super duplex steel, which isn’t a common material for automotive application. It’s used in the offshore industry for its corrosion resistance, strength, etc.

It’s been a few years since the last materials course, but the Cr content is something like over 50% as opposed to 12% or whatever. Anyway, it’s usually very high quality stuff.

He also told me that the tubes are a cast steel, as sand was coming out of the welds. It looks like the tubes were cast & machine welded, then the flanges were welded by hand.

I plan on contacting Full Race again when I finish exams to get some details. They couldn’t replace it, as it’s not a production manifold, and I didn’t want to go top mount / twin scroll, so I just fixed what I had.

I’ll see how the new welds hold up, I’ve been scoping out some of the bracing brackets that manifolds like the Megan manifolds have now, I might see if I can get one fabricated.

^That’s very odd of Full-race.

Some stainless metal are magnetic. It signifies a low quality stainless.  
But, the tube are definitely not stainless as stainless is rarely cast. I’ve only ever seen cast SS once… and it;s a bitch to work with.  
The tubes look like they were hand welded to me. But, I don’t have the piece to judge.

Yeah, the collector section looks hand welded, but the tubes themselves (you can see at the bottom of the pic) look machine welded. It’s definitely a bitch to work with…the welds aren’t clean using the stainless rod.

I keep hearing that it’s strange of Full race, but I also hear a lot of people that have had them crack and sent them back to get repaired. The materials seem to be high quality, but the turbo and exhaust hang from this thing, so the unsupported weight is the problem I think…fatiguing the metal.

Dolph, your car was the one I was always seeing when I took a shuttle bus to humber college, over at the remote parking lot by woodbine mall, Im sure of it. I would park in the mall and walk over to that lot. Didn’t recognize it was the same car at the Bings meet, looks good tho GJ.
