I have a feeling I can just “remove” the clearcoat to get this effect, but that’s a pretty big gamble. The thing I am worried about is scuffing it down usually doesn’t leave a Satin finish it leaves a “I sanded” this finish. Perhaps I’ll try it on some of the Mouldings I took off the side. The best way to paint your Z/06 that color is to paint your Z/06 that color. Two-stage black with 30-40% flattener. Scuffing up the clearcoat is gonna look like shit after a year. ---

I’m going to laugh when you spend all this time and money, finally get your car to the ultimate level of dull, then get it detailed and they buff the shit out of it and make it shiny again. I really hate the dull black fad and hope it goes away soon. ---

so you want your car flat black? i was thinking of doing it… i have a million rock chips on my car, and i wanted to fix them anyways, and since fixing them would essentially be repainting 3/4 of the car i was just gonna do the whole thing flat black… but if i would have posted this i would have been flamed… ---

Its the only thing I know of that MIGHT give u a uniform finish. Hand or any other type of sanding would be a waste of time. You will never get it to look right. Plus this is a delicate finish. So much as rubing accross it with a denim coat will produce bad scuffing… and you CANT polish that out. ---

X… [/quote] please do not try achieving that finish by sanding. I’m willing to put money on a non-uniform, I-just-took-sandpaper-to-it-like finish. Your best bet is to spray. If i had to offer a redneck approach (it is a corvette right?) to accomplishing this, i would put clear satin vinyl on all the panels. Not only will you achieve the look, but you’ll be safeguarded from chips. Do it. ---

But for the cost to buy the vinyl and have it professionally and properly applied, you might as well have it painted. First and foremost, I would do the suspension work we were talking about to make sure you like the drive enough to keep it for more than a year or so… ---

If you plan on selling it, you won’t get the value you should be getting. Most Vette owners want the nice shiny black, not the rat rod flat black. ---

[/quote] Easier to maintain, maybe, but will not last. We have fully wrapped several of our event marketing trucks and the vinyl tends to shrink from the seams over time and if you get a tear you have to replace the whole piece of vinyl.
