I’m almost 100% positive that there is an app that allows your iPhone to have a pin, and go on BBM. I forget whats its called, and it might only be for jailbroken iPhones.

no data plan, they use WIFI for web access.

Read an article about humans and their ability to write/type information at various speeds. I can’t seem to find the URL but here’s how things ranked:
1. Computer keyboard
2. iPhone
3. Blackberry
4. Handwriting
5. Misc. smartphones
I bet I can type faster on my iPhone than most people can with a computer keyboard 😉

You would need a blackberry data plan at the minimum. No RIM servers = no BBM.

you do realize that BBM is a messaging service through a secure set of servers that RIM controls, right?

my cousin works at RIM and got to play with one of these 2 months ago.
hes getting one to swap out his 9700 with. says its amazing.
ill play with his in a week or so and update this post.

My Nokia E90 had BlackBerry Connect on it, but I don’t think BBM. It was the first non-BB device to work with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) and that was in '07-ish. I’m sure if I could connect to a BES on my Nokia someone could also work in BBM.

The problem is in the plan. In order to get Blackberry functionality on the Nokia you had to have the Blackberry data plan so you could use the RIM servers.
the iphone requires its own data plan, which you automatically get put onto. You can’t have both a BB and iphone plan.

The server uses hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) and transmission control protocol (TCP) to communicate with the handhelds. It also encrypts the data with triple data encryption standard (DES) or advanced encryption standard (AES).
RIM servers appear to just use http/https for data transmission (same as your web browser). You could probably write a program that would interface with it (if you could crack the encryption, which I don’t know much about), but they probably have other security measures like only allowing certain IPs to connect or something(just a guess).
It wouldn’t be impossible, but I am sure that you would need RIM’s cooperation.
