It seems like with a tune (I know it is not stock then) this thing would destroy an M3 on a test track with less weight and better aerodynamics. Hell maybe it would even match the much cheaper Mustang. 😃

After more thinking…I still really like this car. My biggest gripe would be that they didn’t go with some high revving NA engine…something that you really couldn’t pull any more power out without forced induction. To me, M cars aren’t turbo cars…this feels more like a sport edition of the 135.

Wait, your complaint is that it has too much power potential with mods? :dunno:

But the next m3 will be a turbo car also.

Update with Ring times from Jalopnik. Results are less than stellar.

> You're wondering how fast the new BMW 1 Series M can get around Germany's Nürburgring, right? BMW isn't talking, but some who've witnessed a timed run have an answer. And it's good news for Audi. Read on.

I think it is safe to assume that anyone who buys this car AND cares about Nurburgring times is going to buy a tune which would change the numbers enough I would think. Just sayin.

Valid point. That being said, I expected a bit more out of the box.

To a point. Not to completely reiterate what I said…but there’s something pure about a high revving naturally aspirated M car. It’s the same reason why the Z06 is so impressive, here is a car that rips without the just-add-boost mentality.

I’m sure my sentiments will hold true to that car as well. Maybe I’m too much of a purist…I dunno. For some reason I going to compare the '03-04 Mustang Cobra to the current 5.0 Mustang. The '03-04 went with a power adder and IRS, while the current 5.0 is naturally aspirated and solid axle…guess which car outperforms the other? I’d like to think BMW can put together a stout enough NA powerplant to tear the track up with…kind of like what BMW did for the McLaren F1.

this will probably be more akin to the e36 m3, which is a pretty cool car, but not as extraordinary as the m-cars usually are.
