Im ordering some channels today to box my rails and i need to know what thickness it should be.

There is no “need” to be thickness. Have you tried searching this? Because this has been discussed quite a bit.
I’ve used both 18g and 16g. Mainly because that was all that was available at the time.

my body guy says that it has to be the same thickness otherwise when hes welding them together one will melt faster than the other

Well. He probably doesn’t know a whole lot about welding then. It doesn’t HAVE to be the same thickness. You just have to know how to weld. I weld stuff of varying thickness all the time at work.

agreed your welder doesnt know to much. Good luck tho
