# Bugs can fly?????

Who says “Bugs” can’t fly???
Well at least maybe get the front off the ground.
Took the bug out to Dragway 42 on Saturday, Nov 12, 2005, for some more air time and to get the 1/4 mile times a little faster…and did.
Got an 11.6600@116.52 in the 1/4 with the fronts carrying through the 60 foot.
Got to love rear wheel drive cars don’t ya??
See you guys next year at the track!

Dragway 42 is the only place open after PRP and Quaker City Raceway closes. It’s west of Akron, past Summit Racing.

Why shouldnt bugs be able to pull the wheels?? They are rwd historic cars that weigh next to nothing because in teh 60’s there the crash test standards to be met.
Either way nice air time. Thing hooks like hell!

mute point. bugs came w/ a walloping 40 crank hp from factory. this car has more than that
granted, they been around a while. but at the same time, these things can murder almost all import cars when setup properly. hence why all motor class has so many restrictions on them (nhra), or wont let them run at all (ndra). if nhra let the bug guys do whatever, they would set back the k series motor back a decade. as they would cover the high to mid 9’s norris is running no problem as well as take out the rotary motors.

Air-cooled vw’s have been around since the 50’s and that really is the reason for the restrictions, and why they can murder the imports.
The things are like go carts with 50 years of performance back-ground. So cheap to build, so easy to build, and so light, and rwd.
If there werent restrictions on them, you wouldnt see anything at the track in all motor besides them if you wanted to be competitive!

Yup, you guys are so right about the bugs. Very light, and pretty cheap to build. And there’s still a lot of them around.
The real reason the imports get beat by them is power to weight. You really can’t get any other import as light as a bug with that much power. You can get chromoly tube chassis bugs down under 1,000 lbs easy, and with 280-300 hp N/A, that’s pretty tough for other imports to top.
Heck a performance camshaft for my bug is only $49. Cheap forged stroker crank is only $279. (a really good one is about $700-$1,200 though)
Mine weighs in at 1650 with the seats in, and in street form. Without the pass seat, rear seat, with full 2 gallons in tank, no speaker tray, it weighs in at 1516. That’s still with everything else in there, including tools in case I blow off the fan belt at the end of the track. I had it checked at the track with some corner scales so the weight was very accurate.
Doesn’t take too much HP to make it go fast. With all the weight on the rear, you get some serious traction too!
Still hoping to have a lighter one built with a bigger motor for the N/A class, and of course…still street legal for some fun. Hoping for a car about 1300 lbs and motor N/A about 250-270 hp.
Speaking of which, Cabby, still need to come out your way to play a little street time when the salt is gone and it gets a little warmer. No heat in DA’ bug makes street running a bit of a bitch right now. Above 45 degrees F. and I’ll be OK to play.
When I get another new clutch and pressure plate in there, I’ll be in for the Dyno day. Let me know when and I’ll bust my ass to get it in there.
