say i am on the same node as my relative and he has the new rca modem and i have the shittier motorola surfboard shit. if were to switch mine with his would his work at my house or no? the service tech said if we are on the same node it is possible it will work he said it would be as if i didn’t lease their modem but instead provided my own ---

No. You need the modem mac put on your account. When you switch it the IP sent to your account will pull up a screen that says call this number and provide this modem mac so they can provision your modem properly ---

Hmm you sure? I plugged a linksys cable modem brand new out of the box and didnt have to update the mac address with timewarner. ---

[/quote] The IP isnt given to the modem intil it is in the system. They have an automate page that ryan described but the thing with your modem is a mystery to me. ---

i just figured you can cause if you go out and buy your own modem and plug it in it will work according the tech… your just not leasing time warners. and he says if your on the same node you can switch them how do i find out if i am on the same node? ---

if you lease yours why dont you just put your modem in the microwave or pour a glass of water in it and then get the new one for yourself ---

If i understand correctly… You have two modems already online with TW. You want to switch them from one house to another? Yes you can and if your on the same node it will work. You can find your node by doing a tracert to like [google.com](http://google.com), it’ll be the first 10.x.x.x # ---

If your leasing it, take it to Chicago St. tell them it wasn’t working and they will give you a new one… FormulaLSI: As for buying your own it should give you a provisioning screen, however if yours didn’t thats awkward because it would be unaware of your modem on the system. Either way, ah well ---

i have 1 modem. the motorola surfboardSB5100 serries… they are pieces of shit compared to the new RCA ones. i just want an rca one. just preference i guess im picky at that stuff though ---

What is different about it? They are only as good as their provisioning file. When i worked there rcas were garbage. Power supplies would go out on them constantly. ---

the new rca modems are better for home networking according to looking it up it doesn’t slow you down as much as the motorola one does… but none the less i like my internet fast and im a bandwidth whore and i do not like share with the other piece of shit my mother uses. ---

motorola’s surfboard is pretty good modem, the older RCAs sucked ass. There shouldn’t be any noticable difference on your end. You may have weak signals. ---

It still comes down to a cable modem vs. a cable modem. Neither will boost your speed up anymore than they are provisioned for. However the RCA’s are a smaller box… ---

Automated system, plug it in fill out the information and go very simple at least until they do the transition to TW then it will become a nightmare. All the modems are pretty much the same in usage as they are built to similar standards. Honestly though the new RCA DCM-425s seem quite solid just as much if not more so than the motorolas. ---

[/quote] My 3100 was running for years without ever having to reboot it. I have a 5100 now cause of the docsis stuff but it is far from a POS and lets not forget RCA = Radio shack. ---

back when powerlink first came out, I had a scientific atlanta modem. They replaced it two times, then a third time when they went to docsis 2.0. Anybody know what TW charges to lease the modem? I can hardly justify buying one because I’m dumping TW as soon as fios comes around, and I’m moving away and will probably end up with dsl or something when I do. ---

[/quote] I’m well aware of the legendary 3100s, and I love my motorola nor have I touched it since I’ve had it installed. But compared to the RCAs the 425s have proved quite good much unlike the old shit ones, at least based on experience thus far.
