I know a bunch of you take some pretty good shots with your DSLRs. I’m looking to upgrade my old 3.1mp Canon point and shoot to something from this decade, but am overwhelmed with the choices/options out there. I dont want to spend more than $400-500, but I do want something I can learn on and improve my skills, which are severely lacking at this point. Any recommendations? Thanks.

Used Canon rebel series (XTi, XSi, T1i) or even a 20D or 30D and a decent lens would fit the bill nicely. If you want brand new then the Rebel XS (1000D) is your best bet which will be somewhere around $500 plus tax.
I am not advising against Nikon, I just don’t know enough about them to recommend specifics.

im the complete opposite of AMD, im a Nikon shooter that doesnt know a ton about Canon … from the Nikon stand point you can get a used D80 for about the 500$ mark or a new D3000 which is their entry DSLR, it all depends on how far you think you might want to take your photography! Canon seems to have a slightly cheaper price tag and higher resolution from my searchings… i would recommend shooting Nikon Canon or even Sony has some good stuff these days for entry level DSLRs … if you have anyone that you know that shoots one of those 3 brands and would let you borrow lenses or can help you out thats the one i would recommend … sometimes the cameras functions and button layout can be a challenge by itself … if you want to know about Nikon stuff you can PM me anytime ill answer any questions that i can

Yeah I was pretty much set on either a Canon or a Nikon.
What I dont know is if I’d be better off starting on a more fully featured point and shoot with manual options or an entry level DSLR and use the stock lens for now (knowing I’m able to change out lenses down the road for something better and that most kit lenses aren’t that great). Obviously I have a ton to learn, and like anything else the easiest way to do it is just get out there and practice. I’ve also spent some time trying to understand the relationship between ISO and aperture and how important light is.

dslr no doubt … not just for upgrading it but you will have an auto mode plus all the other modes to learn on with an entry level dslr

I just bought a Canon Powershot Sx20 IS, and its a amazing camera , after tax and additional warranty I paid $480. I have a thread in here of pics of my car that I took with the camera.:thumbup

if your gonna spring for a T1i get the T2i … and honestly if your gonna get a DSLR for the video camera why dont you just buy a video camera?

actually you can learn alot on full auto, first thing i look for in a photo is composition, it also helps to have a camera in your hands to get a feel for the balance and weight of your camera … will help you alot later on in low light situations

Thanks for the help guys and gals. I bought a Canon Rebel XS, did a whole shitload of reading, took it to Orlando on vacation, and took about 700 pictures down there, all pretty much on manual while playing with the settings. Some suck, some came out pretty well (at least in my opinion).
