# carb'd bike...which octane gas do you run?

i’m hearing mixed opinions. some are saying only run 93, some are saying it doesn’t matter just run 87. it’s a 98 CBR 600 F3. what are your thoughts and why?

run lowest octane rating that you can before it starts detonating. (that’s the rule of thumb I’ve always heard atleast)

Yes you should run the lowest octane you can without detonating, but back when I didn’t know anything about gas I always ran 93 in my bikes without a problem.
Now that I know a little more I’d still run 93, given how high the compression is in most bikes.
Still have the manual for the bike? It should say…

um, it’s a difference of like a dollar a tank, just run 93. especially if the bike has a power commander or anything.

If the manual says 87 and there are no mods done to it, run 87. Not only is 93 a waste of money but it can actually lower power output marginally and creates more carbon build-up. Modern engines all run with a small amount of detonation and running a higher octane gas than recommended prevents that detonation which in turn makes a less complete burn and creates more carbon. Granted the difference is minimal but the common stupid belief of “higher octane = more power” is not only a complete farce, the exact opposite is true.
You only realize the full potential of higher octane gas when you bring up the compression ratio, lean out the fuel mix and/or advance timing.

Read the owners manual.
I run 93 in any bike. Most sport bikes have fairly high compression ratio and if it’s air cooled you definately need to run 93.

i wanted to run 93. i’ve always wanted a vehicle that performed well enough to justify purchasing 93. i’m just hearing it’s good then i’m hearing it’s bad.

i have always ran 93 in my bike, its an 87 honda cbr with 35000 miles on it and it still runs strong. Since a bike is only like 5 gallons it only a difference of a dollar each time.

it’s not the price that concerns me. it’s the conflicting stories. thanks all for your input.
