> One of our readers pointed us to **[this page](http://www.dodge.com/en/2008/challenger/)** over at Dodge’s website that contradicted [our earlier post](http://www.autoblog.com/2007/11/29/2008-dodge-challenger-srt8-to-start-at-37-995/) about the 2008 Challenger SRT-8’s pricing, which was originally announced at $37,995 (including the $675 destination charge). We realize that inflation is a cruel mistress, but a bump in the sticker to $40,095 left us scratching our heads. A few emails back and forth between the people at Chrysler revealed that the SRT-8 was slapped with a $2100 gas-guzzler penalty that accounted for the discrepancy in price. Not a real surprise considering the 425 hp 6.1-liter HEMI V8. As a comparison, however, the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 gets a [$1300 consumption penalty](http://www.edmunds.com/new/2008/ford/shelbygt500/100912573/optionsresults.html?action=2), even with 75 more horses under the hood. A quick search over at [fueleconomy.gov](http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/info.shtml#guzzler) revealed that if Challenger SRT-8 owners are penalized $2100, that means that they’ll also only be getting between 18.5 and 19.5 mpg in the combined cycle. We doubt that’ll be a deterrent, but it’s food for thought.

It is pretty kick ass… but $41 msrp??

Once the dealers get these they’ll prolly sell in the 45 - 50 range (:picard: ) for a couple years… stagnating the market and making Chrysler think its a poor choice.

I’d bet that the entry level cars will sell en mass to alot of fleet use… and hopefully the mid-level cars will respond well to the aftermarket. Cause in looking at this, not too promising for Chrysler.

Then again, they’ve been kicking ass in overall use & sales with their last couple of platforms. So hopefully they _have_ gotten this mix right again.

:tif:

GM hasn’t posted any prices yet but they state that it will be competitively priced with the Challenger and the Mustang. But that’s the number that I am waiting for, Blue with white rally stripes. To kick the crap out of Nelstoys Challenger 🙂

umm…what company uses a 2 door for a fleet car?

It is priced well…this is made to compete against cars like the Mustang GT500 , and Camaro 1LE or what ever they call the one they want to put the z06 motor in…

I think the v6 camaro would be around 22…and the 6.0/6.2 v8 somewhere around 29 …then you will prolly pay 45ish for the zo6 beast…

So what this means is they will still sell a million mustangs, 1/2 a million camaros, and 1/4 million challengers…thats my guess lol

I’d rather a cuda

A local dealer had a PURPLE SRT8 Charger on the lot for $42K, so a two-door with the 6.1L for less than that, not bad I suppose.
