# Countertop replacement DOH!!

So I am getting a new counter top installed next week. I am removing the old one. Last night I decided to see what I am dealing with. I found a bit of a surprise.
I guess if your counter is a bit longer than you want, you just cut out the wall!!! The top is about 1/2" too long. It is like that on the other end as well. Morons!

Think about it.
It is far easier for the average DIY homeowner to trace and cut the drywall than it is to cut the countertop without the proper tools. Studderin makes a good point about the corner being out of square.
Not saying it was the right thing to do, but I can see why it was done.

If you cut that sort of countertop the surface will start to peel up
just like if you cut “low quality” wood veneer, it starts peeling because you removed the seal. Maybe not right away, but overtime
And it also looks like that was on the size of a stove, or a fridge. Not all of them are standard widths. Instead of Re-doing all of the counter tops you can do what they did

Thats a single cover formica laminate top with a drip edge, it cuts fine. And won’t peel? (chip) if you know what your doing. Looks like a base 18 to me, top is 18 1/4+. Off the 1st pic they had room to fit it as a good way to order them, for pro install). It still had over hang and he had 30+ for the stove in there, the layout was fine. Even if theres not filler on the side of the cad to the wall, (to keep the cab sqare and fit) Or if cab face is sucked over tight to the wall, pulling it out of sqare. The front is still min. 18 it would still work, scribing the top to the wall or putting it IN the wall.

My friend lives in a nice apartment building and they replaced her fridge. It was too wide, so they cut the counter top. It looks like a blind man cut it with a fucking sawzall, it’s terrible.

Thats probably what happened here, so they just moved the countertop in the wall
Not everyone has access to a table saw
every stove now is usually 32" , and you leave generally a quarter inch of space on both sides. Most companies will make a second template if you dont have the stove in your kitchen when they do the measuring because the measurements the stove company gives you are not always correct

Is that a wall behind the drywall? Why don’t I see any studs? Maybe the counter top was put in before the drywall?

The countertop is cut. They did a hack cut on it. The cabinet was not squared to the wall. It’ll all be taken care of.

Sure, it’s not pretty when you remove it, but it looked fine to me.
Have you ever tried to fit an edge like that to a shitty wall?
I must have spent 3 hours trying to trim a shelf that I made in my kitchen.
