# Damaged pistons, use or replace?

So, when I pulled my head, I foud the timing was off, and as a result, the valves dug into the pistons. The pistons have some surface damage, will they be ok to use or should I just get new pistons as well?

do it right the first time. id go new

clean with carb cleaner & check for cracks,no cracks run’em

yeah, also make sure there isnt any sharp edges on the pistons from the valves hitting. if there is sand it smooth

clean em and run em. just check piston to valve clearance to make sure ok  
crank the motor by hand a few revolutions once you put belt on to make sure no contact

If the piston is not badly damaged aka cracked run it!!!

I had a feeling something like this would happen on the cam install…it happens often to newbs
