do we have a Detroit thread? i searched but didnt really see one.

some great images; but more importantly, some strong context to go with them. They do tours too… that sounds really interesting actually.

Discovery had a great series call “Life After People” where the premise was what would happen if all human life on earth was suddenly wiped out. Detroit was featured heavily.

I enjoy looking through Buffalo’s history back in the early 1900’s when Main St. came right down to the mouth of the ship canal. It’s pretty cool to see the city before it kind of closed off the canal and the arena blocked off that part of the city. To see the sawmills, the grain towers in use and just to see how busy the city was is always fascinating for me to.
Detroit on the other hand, looks to have fallen apart far faster and has not been cleared of it’s rundown properties as fast as some would have liked.
To see that stadium in the shape that it;s in, is crazy. There are flat screens in that bar, so they must have been using it recently?

Someone purchased the stadium privately for 500k (or around there) but after refurbishing and annual upkeep of 1.5mil it was closed down (2009?). I guess the juice wasn’t worth the squeeze.

The second pic is the old yacht club on belle isle. Half a mile down they built the new one and left the old one. Should be interesting to see what the state does now that they control it as a state park. Detroit ran the island poorly.
Anyone coming to the Belle Isle Grand Prix next weekend? It’s a great time.
