# dirtbiking in the winter, suggestions for tires to stud?

anyone got any suggestions on what kind of tires would be good to stud for winter/ice riding? I came across this, looked pretty gnarley

LOL, oh man, I remember back in the day, I took my cr500 on a lake in the winter, I musta been going 50mph, middle of the lake cracked, bike flipped foward I fucking flew in the air like 40 feet… Had the biggest black and blue from the top of my hip aalll the way down my ass.
… sorry memories got carried away on me lol, when I was poor and didnt wanna rouine tires I used to just let alotta air out of my tires JUST to the point where I wouldnt bend my rim, worked good for me, got way better traction… Obviously regular knobbys with studs would work great as well lol.

The last time I rode a dirtbike in the winter was when I had my old Husqvarna SMR 510.
Hit black ice and dumped it 15 minutes before the new owner came to pick it up. Also ruined a $160 jacket and $50 pair of gloves in the process. :rofl
LL Bean really stands behind their return policy. They replaced both ripped items for free. haha!

That tire with bolts through it would not work well at all on ice. As for a tire just get one with the hardest compound you can and fairly flat lugs. Then get some ice screws and put them through every lug on the tire. Then fill the tires with green slime tire sealer. Make sure you do both the front and the back tire.

If you’re riding more in snow than on ice, those bolted tires will prob work pretty well, pending swingarm clearance and the like. If you’re looking to ride on the ice, here’s the tire setup we’ve been running on our bikes for several winters now:

Even that “snow tire” in the OP pic, wouldnt let you go anywhere in more than 4 inches of snow, and thats with eating through the snow and gripping the frozen ground or some ice or hard backed bellow. You will be dog paddeling around everywhere. 4 inch wide tires with 400+lbs on top of them wont float on snow! lol.
Ice is a different story. A hard compound smoked MX tire only need about 1/2" left on the knobbies. Get a 2000 count bag of Kold Kutters. Do exactly like he did above.
On clean ice, you will hook better than pavement! I have a few GN champ flat track buddies that are faster on ice than dirt!
DONOT ride those ice studds across pavement, like across the road to get gas by the lakes. or even across fields. they will wear out fast.

First off dont get thoose cheap ice screw, make sure to get the Kold Kutters, they make a huge diffrence over the regular ones. A lot of people run the 1" screws so they dont rip out as easy or fast. But then you have to come up with a way to protect your tube. Most of my friends use carpeting actually, or cut down another tire.
