It would be worth it for me re: trailering/towing. I get about 12-14mpg city/highway and maybe 8-9 tops trailering, vs a diesel which would get a bit better city and a TON better, gas vs diesel is about 20% ($1 more per gal vs $4ish for gas) and the mileage increase would be closer to 30-50% better… as it was said “its just math” ---

See, first issue is that you are talking about the average driver, who never really gets anywhere near the rated highway MPG on a Civic. Lets compare an 07 Civic non-hybrid, which realistically will average 27mpg to my 2002 Jetta TDI, which got about 47mpg average. I drive 25k/annually, which puts me at $2,670 in Diesel. The Civic would cost me about $3,916. This is also not considering a few items. The diesels value holds MUCH better than a Gasser. I sold my Jetta for over double the cost that the same year, same equipped gasser Jetta would go for, but you can also find cheaper models with high mileage that are VERY reliable. The Diesel also goes almost 10k without an oil change. The motors in the 02 era VW’s will run well over 300,000 miles or more with minimal maintenance. And when Gas runs out :D, the diesel will run on grease. Biodiesel can also be made for about $1 a gallon last time I checked. I love my civic, but looking backwards - I should have just purchased a cheaper TDI. I would have saved myself a fortune. ---

From my experience with diesel sedans v. small 4 banger gas savers, the diesel is way more consistent. When the redline is 4.5k, you can’t beat on the car. With a new civic you MIGHT average 35 highway. The new jetta gets a solid 60-65 highway, and you’ll see numbers like that driving in rush hour too. Sure you can constantly shift at 3k in your civic. But would you really? Always? I didn’t even notice when diesel went up a full dollar in the TDI. Plus it’s awesome to hear a tractor coming and all you see is a purple Vdub. edit: as far as it being a “wash” to buy a new diesel over gasser, the jetta’s premium for getting the TDI will be less than 500$. ---

My friend with a diesel pickup truck did some math and told particularly for him diesel would have to get to over $6 a galllon for it not to be worth vs the same truck with gas engine ---

Is biodiesel really worth it if you’re not making it? Prices were hard to find, but from [here](http://www.eere.energy.gov/afdc/pdfs/afpr_apr_08.pdf)(april numbers), the average from our region was in the $4.50/gal range. Buffalo Biodiesel is selling right now at $6.00/gal. School me because I dont really know, but doesnt seem like the numbers work out. ---

I dont know I have not ever driven on Bio… the owner before me told me he only ran it on bio… but with bio the you get less mpg… ---

The companies around here are buying up the oil sites at I think 3 bucks a 55 gallon drum. Which they supply their own drums and technically own the used oil (weird legality there). most sites are gone ☹ ---

For me, it doesn’t make sense. I drive 9k a year and so does the wife. I think a lot of the people who are for it are driving more than 20k+ a year at which point it really does make sense. ---

BTW Biodiesel IS not worth it if you are not making it. its more expensive right now, and you DO NOT get better mileage. ---

for anyone who uses a diesel truck for work: My dad has a 2006 dodge ram cummins diesel. pulling a 28’ trailer around 15,000# he gets 14 mpg. With our Chevy gasser 8.1 litre, pulling the same trailer nets him 8 mpg. He drives 40,000 miles a year with a trailer behind him. 40,000/14 = 2857 gallons of diesel 40,000/8 = 5000 gallons of gasoline 2857 \* $5.00 = $14,285 a year for diesel and 5000 \* $4.25= $21,250 a year for gasoline There is a good argument for anyone looking at a work truck 🙂 ---
