it all depends on the measuring equipment or the sig figs of numbers involved.

For example:

.444444 + .555555 = .999999

but

1 \* .999999 /= .999999

I would think people that work on cars would immediately realize that if it’s not 1, then it’s not 1. If your car could do the 1/4 in 11.999999999 there’s no way in HELL you’d round that up and call it 12. You’d say you run in the 11s. 🙂 Right?

I don’t get these kinds of threads.

It’s not subjective. This is freakin’ math here. Any number is what it is, nothing more, nothing less.

Are these threads created simply in hopes that someone will just say “yep, that’s what it is, 1?”

What’s the confusion supposed to be? “Close enough?” If I had .999999 million dollars, I wouldn’t be a millionaire. I’d need another dollar. Sure, it’s only $1 away from an even million, but I wouldn’t have a whole million.

.99999999999999999999999999999999999999 **million dollars** equals what?

And what if You add a dollar to that? You’re OVER 1 million

the question is what does .99999 repeating equal

Guys, its not .9999, its .9999~ meaning the 9 continues on forever.

The only reason that they say it is equal, is because you cannot subtract it from 1, because you cannot have 0.00000~, because that equals 0. And you cannot say “well, theres a 1 at the end there” but, there isn’t. The .9999~ goes on for eternity, just like the .0000~ does. It never stops to put the 1, meaning, its 0. so, 1-1 = 0. 1 - .9999~ = 0.0000~ which also equals 0.

I still think its unequal and that the math is flawed, because it is a different number. Just because you cant WRITE .000000~ with it wanting to have a 1 at the end, does not mean that it doesn’t exist!

🙂

But, in essense of mathematics today, it does in fact equal 1. Sadly.

So I guess the arguement is if the 9’s run out to infinity, and hence you can never add something to it to make it 1 (since you won’t know how many 0’s to put in front of your .1), that makes .9999 = 1? If so, that’s pretty stupid. Since when has 1’s oneness been defined by it’s ability to become the one by adding two less than one numbers together? And for that matter, is the oneitude of the one directly related to the colditude of the one? Because no one likes a warm one.

EDIT: Ok, I had to read into this more. So the arguement that it is = 1 is that 1/3 is .3333 repeating, and 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 1. Ok, but .33333 repeating isn’t 1/3rd, it’s a REPRESENTATION of 1/3. Depending on how far out you carry that .333 will decide how close to 1/3rd you get, but 1/3 cannot be represented entirely with a decimal. The arguement was that if you take .3333 repeating and multiply by 3, all the 3’s become 9’s, and since 1/3 x 3 = 1, .3333 repeating must equal 1. The problem with that is .3333 repeating isn’t 1/3rd, it’s only a representation.
