I’ll say it one last time: 1/3 does not equal .333333333333~; it is an approximation. Therefore, you cannot equate (1/3 +1/3 +1/3 = 1) to (.3333~+.3333~+.3333~=1), because those two expressions are not equal. ---

Does .999999 = 1 vPOLL Your 9 does not have a dash mark above it. That changes everything. ---

umm actually 1 divided by 3 does equal .33333333333333333333333333333333… do the math long hand if you need 3 goes into one .3 times…leaving remainder of.1 3 goes into 1 ,3 times…etc etc etc ---

its been awhile since i’ve done math… but… how do you get from: - x = -0.999… to 9x = 9.000… = 9 ? to get from - x = - 0.9999~ to the next step, you would have to multiply both sides by -9. when you do so, you can’t multiple -9 by -0.9999~ because it will only give you an approximate #, it will NOT give you 9. it’s impossible to multiply that without rounding. and like sureshot said, 1/3 does not equal .3333~ 1 does NOT equal 0.9999~ there is a place for 0.9999~ on the number line, and it is IMMEDIATELY TO THE LEFT of 1.0. /thread. > [@JoesTypeS](#): > > oh wtf what asshat deleted my post w/ the proof? > > For all n, 1 = 0.99…(n 9s)…91, where the notation means that after all the 9s we have a “10” for the last digit (ie, we are extending base 10 notation to include a “10” digit).
