Last month I got a new pup, 7 month old boxer, (i made this thread on a boxer forum, but i’m still awaiting activation, so figured I’d crosspost it here) when I got him home the first time, i noticed a bit of fur missing around his joints (knees) I took some pictures, it looks similar to some of the mange pics on a far lesser scale. I had him at the vet and they didnt say anything about it, when I asked, they told me to watch it for a couple weeks and see if it got worse. So far I don’t see any change, just looks like dry skin. I took some pictures and I’ll post them below… Is there anything I can try to get it to clear up before bringing him in to pay 150 for a vet visit? It doesnt seem to bother him at all and it hasnt affected me or the other dog yet. Not sure about just being near the knees, but my boxer has always had incredibly sensitive skin. She gets bad allergies and scratches like crazy quite often. For the bump, it may be from a recent shot at the Vet. Our boxer had a shot, and it was a noticeable bump for about 6 months. Vet said its normal. ---

Dry skin + knocking legs together = issue. My parents greyhound would get pretty scuffed up with their long legs and sharp nails. ---

He did just get a rabies shot… 🙂 that makes me feel better, he also had a chip put in him somewhere. I dont know how the legs rubbing would work, as its on the outside of his legs and he never scratches in front of me. this seams normal, my pit has very sensitive skin and terriers are know for the skin issues. My pit gets skin irritations/bumps/dry patches all the time. I think youll be ok. ---

That’s perfectly normal in my experience with 2 boxers. My one boxer had much worse patches than that. They seemed worse in the summer which made me think it was from lying on concrete or something to do with outdoor activities. I \<3 boxers! Added— The gas won’t ever fully go away but I HIGHLY suggest Duck & Potato food from Petco. It’s a bit more expensive but it’s single protein single carb and easier for them to digest. My boxer had colitis and this is the only food she could eat without issue. Jager…try this food…it made her itchy/flaking better and her coat got VERY shiny and smooth. You ever give your dog Benadryl. We have a Golden Retriever that goes swimming at our cottage all the time. He gets really dry skin, some bites from bugs and rashes. We give him Benadryl and it really helps out a lot. Best of luck! ---

Putting any ointment on it will be useless, the dog will just lick it off. I would just monitor it. My dog has permanent spots on his front legs (elbow? area) where laying on the ground has rubbed off the hair and left a permanent spot of tough skin. Shit happens. ---

What brand/flavor of dog food is he eating? Could be a minor flea allergy, too. Doesn’t look like either type of mange, but if it gets any worse, it could be. I’m leaning towards flea allergy or possibly food sensitivity. ---

^Royal Canin Maxi Puppy He just started on it 3-4 weeks ago. He seems to enjoy it :). Flea allergy? the previous dog (pitbull) had fleas, I had the house fumigated and the dogs removed and dipped/treated, Havent seen a flea in 3 months. The boxer loves the pool, but this was noticeable before the he lived with me. Not to mention I bathe him with normal water after each trip in the pool. ---

Could just be hot-spots. When my Lab was younger, probably starting around the 12 month mark till 24 months of his life he had red scaly spots/sores/scabs on his front elbows. It was the callus’s building up from him laying down on his elbows. He’s almost 3 now and they’re completely gone and have been for probably a year. I asked the vet and other people about it, and they said it’s normal for a lot of breeds to get that. Looked similar to what you’re seeing, but Jax’s was a lot worse; he had a bald scabby area the size of a 1/2 dollar to dollar sized coin. If it is an allergy, you can try the Benedryl; 1mg/lb dose. I typically just give 1/2 that though to both of my pups unless I’m trying to knock them out for a long road-trip or whatever other reason. ---

A 7 month old eating puppy food? Isn’t it a little late for that? Puppy food has a ton of calories in it and if you keep him on it for too long he’ll start to put on bad weight. Just something to be careful with. I give Koa Eukanuba. I’ve tried a bunch of other foods and always switch back to it. She had more energy on it, her coat is shinier and she doesn’t rip ass nearly as often unless she’s sick. ---

I’m telling you Benadryl. Look into it if needed, but works pretty damn well on dogs. I know people dont usually take advice from me on here, but this is one thing I will stand by for sure. Edit: Use peanut butter and hide the pill inside. its worth a try. You wont harm the dog if it doesnt help ---

Yes, shes had them since I got her, they havent changed either, for better or worse (from what I can tell) As for the puppy food, I did some research and they said to keep her on puppy food up until 1.5 years basically… then switch to Boxer 26 or comparable food.
