i of course will go with chro mo, but the thing is, i want the interior to look exactly stock after the cage is in… i know this is possible 🙂

Im not speaking for dom chasis, as those guys know way more about this shit than i do. But i’ll try to shed some light on this, and they can chime in if i fuck up. As i had to go through this myself when i had to do my car…
on 1 ¾ inch o.d. x .118 inch wall mild steel tubing, mig is easiest to use, tig works if you want the bling weld beads-- but is time consuming. Keep in mind, they aint using some shitty craftsman welder. Migs are nice if you have the right setup.
Only have to use tig when you use chrome moly tubing. Can use tig on mild steel-- but the time it takes, it aint worht it as the mig will pentrate good enough. If it didn’t, then i dont think the nhra would allow mild steel to be mig’d in place.
Info is from the nhra rulebook.
what i dont understand about nhra rulebook is rollbars use 1 3/4 odx tubing for mild steel and chromo. But their roll cages need a minimum of 1 5/8 odx. You would think the bar would have the skinnier tubing diameter, figureing the cage is required for cars 9.99 seconds or quicker, and any vehicle running 135 mph or faster (regardless of e.t.). I guess that the extra points on the cage means it can get away w/ the smaller odx since it is tied into the chasis moreso than the standard bar…

If you recall, we had a small water problem back in Sept. (If 5ft of water is a small problem) We lost alot of equipment, including our TIG. Also it does take more time, and if your good at MIG, you can squeeze out some VERY nice welds.

I was figuring it would be the time factor. Sounds good to me using a good mig. That sucks that you lost all that equipment in the flood, but im sure with time you’ll get everything back on its feet.
Thanks for the info, now at least I dont have to worry about having stuff tig’d.

Jay did some superb work on the frame of my Fiero last weekend. It didn’t take him long, and the quality is top notch. He’s also a great guy, and single ladies 🙂

My roll bar is nice. llucky it hasnt been tested but i am sure it will be good to go.
