Which one? how much? and why?

My needs:

Internet \> \*
Cable TV \> Phone line

$ is sort of a factor

So my gut based on cable tv alone is powerlink…but if someone has a better idea tell me.

my mother lives on pleasantview in lancaster, and she had powerlink for a couple years

a month or two ago they got rid of adelphia all together for directTV and verizon DSL, and she hate hate hates how slow the DSL is. I forgot how much she pays though

but if you live anywhere near LCHS i’d imagine you’d have the same speed issues.

i dunno how it is in lancaster network wise, but in most of the immediate buffalo suburbs PLink \> \*.

8 mb / 768k service is ~$60/ mo iirc. I actually see upto 850ish kb/sec down rates. Avg 600-700 kbs.

There are two cheaper / slower levels of powerlink as well.

I used to work for adelphia till rubicant stuck me in his personal hell. DSL is more of a dediacated thing but anywhere in buffalo should be faster. Its places like virginia and georgia that adelphia blows. The level of service you want is called premier, 4mb cap for downloads you probably wont hit that all the time but its nice to know its up that high. I live in depew so im off the same router as you guys and the other day i hit 3.5 . Youd have to call about DSL’s cap though.

One other thing to think about :

DSL requires that you have a phone line (with verizon)

No Naked DSL yet I don’t think

premier is now 6mb down, 768 up, that is about $17 more than the preferred which is Download speeds of up to **4 Mbps** and upload speeds of **384 Kbps.** We also have a basic service which is Download speeds of up to **256 Kbps** and upload speeds of **256 Kbps.**

I like DSL for two reasons.

1. In my opinion its just as fast as PL.
2. Less money your giving to Adelphia that raises your rate if you try to cancel the cable service and just keep PL.

My thinking:

If I cancel the cable, my bill should go down. Well, it does, but the amount they charge for the PL goes up. Why? Is PL going to be faster because I’m paying more now? Nope. Still the same. There are still times when I can’t get online. I call Adelphia, and they say its my router. Too bad I don’t have one.

DSL on the otherhand, hasn’t given me any problems at all.

And as an FYI, you can get DSL without using Verizon as your local carrier. You could even ditch your phone service and get Vonage (broadband phone). It’ll work that way as well.
