# DSM Throw Out bearing and you.

I recently trashed the throw out bearing on my 92 Talon AWD… How i don’t know… fact is I baby the car, because I don’t want it to break.
I do have a ACT 2600 and a Aluminum Flywheel… what happened was the plastic peice that slides on the output shaft just basically deteriorated, and Wound up cracking the steel plate behind the bearing in half. This made the clutch unable to disengage.
Now my question is… Why did I think I read somewhere that the plastic “slider” peice was better then the steel peice that comes with the bearing when you purchase one from napa? This doesn’t seem right… I relize there should be no load on that peice, and maybe it was the steel plate that bent first and caused the plastic peice to get weird forces on it… I dunno…
Who has read about this as well? It’s been awhile since I read into clutch components since its been about 2 years since I bought my clutch.

I had the same issues as you. After pulling the tranny countless times in the span of a month or so, I put a NAPA on in and reused the stock clip from my origonal tranny. The bearing from the ACT clutch kit was a piece of sh1t. I would recommend OEM or a good aftermarket company such as SKF.
Never heard about the plastic/metal thing, but I did notice some NAPA ones came with a plastic ring, some came metal, I used the metal it and it is still working to this day.

+1 on using the OEM. When I installed my 2600 I tossed the ACT bearing in the trash and put in a new OEM bearing. No problems :tup:
Way back when before I was able to work on my own car Hybrid installed my former clutch which was a 2100, they also did the same. No problems back then either.

I just got a bearing from napa… with a metal sleeve… should be back on the road tomorrow… ( I love my dad ) …
I never used the ACT throw out bearing… maybe that was the thing I was thinking about… I thought there was something with the plastic vs. metal sleeve tho as well… maybe it was my imagination.
