When I worked at Don Davis a few times I thought I was going to die driving with retards in the firehawk we had on the lot.

Dont expect a salesman to know shit about a car unless your buying a Ferrari.

That makes absolutely no sense though. Its their livelyhood. They should know everything about the cars they are selling. I don’t get it. I may never use any kind of dental product myself, but my job makes me deal with them everyday so I make sure that I know them inside and out.

LOONG time ago, went into the Northtown Toyota dealership with EfiniMX6 (Gary) :
Went to check out a Celica GT-S 6spd:

Dealer: Yeah I can’t drive stick (She then fumbles with the key) I can’t turn it on.
Me: Push down the clutch, the left peddle.
Dealer: Ok you guys take the car, be back in 30 minutes, because I can’t drive manual.

JoestypeS, if he comes on here can chime on this one. We were looking at Saab’s Saburu Wagon and later went to Subaru to look at their Imprezas:

Joe: So why doesn’t the Impreza wagon come with heated seats? I really want heated seats.
Dealer: The Saab’s car is wider. They have different seats.
US: ???

At an Acura Dealership down here.

Random Customer : “Does this (the RL) need premium fuel?”

Sales Guy : “No, you just won’t get as good mileage with the lower grade”

Random Customer : “So I can put regular in it and just experience lower fuel economy?”

Sales Guy : “Yup, no other difference, it still makes 300HP”

Me : “Uh, a car that requires premium fuel will not get better gas mileage because of it, it’s because the higher octane provides more resistance to predetonation which is (I begin explaining it to them, both the customer and the salesguy, suck squish bang blow and yadda yadda yadda for 5 minutes).”

Sales Guy : “So you’re telling me the Acura technicians lied to me?” (sarcastically, as if I was lying)

Me : “I’m telling you that you don’t know what you are talking about, and maybe you listened wrong with the guy was telling you this stuff.”

Customer (to saleman) : “Do you know why this (the RL) car’s V6 makes more horsepower than this car’s (the TL) V6?”

Salesman : “Yeah, it’s got a bigger motor. It’s better designed.”

Customer looks at me.

Me : “Yeah, the displacement is larger, but it probably has more aggressive cam profiles and higher compression, which also constitutes moreso to the need for the 93 octane fuel. I don’t know all that much about the motor, I’m just assuming. But then again, I don’t work here.”

Customer looks at salesman : “Where’s your manager?”

Salesman looks at me.

I leave, and do a huge dorifuto onto the street.

EDIT : Huge dorifuto in the street with stook. lol

The problem with carsales is that its a high turnover low paying profession. Dealers get any idiot off the street to go through the motions with someone. Other dealers compensate there saleman more and you get better and more knowledgeable employees. Hence the knowledgeable salesman at a Porsche or Mercedes dealer. This is just a general statement though, im sure you can find a really knowledgeable guy at a Hyundai dealer too, but good luck with that.

Sales in general are a high turnover type of job. Nevertheless, to be totally clueless about a car boggles my mind. I can read through a marketing brochure and be able to speak intelligently about a particular in a half hour.

Anyway, I do love calling the dealers out on their mistakes. I feel bad unless the guy is being a tool. Then it feels great.

eh, car guys are the minority. it’s amazing when you see someone driving a new car that you know is a total shitbox… b/c these people have no idea what they’re buying and/or listened closely to stupid salesman who aren’t interested in their needs. i’m sure that guy wasn’t counting on some hawaiian guy schooling their asses on cam profiles 🙂

that was some funny shit, damn… but man, it’s scary considering how little the average person wants to know about one of the second biggest assets they’ll typically invest in

This thread reminds me to go test drive more often

When I took a buddy of mine out to Ogbiene (sp?) Ford to look at a 95 Trans Am they had:
dealer: this car is super fast
me: is it stock?
dealer: o yeah its in perfect shape
me: ok looks nice, lets go test drive it
dealer: ok, but I have to drive
me: why would I buy a car that I havent driven
dealer: we cant let you drive it, its way too fast, I’ll just give you a feel for it
me: it might be faster than the mustangs you sell, but it isnt fast, did you see what we came here in?

then the guy made up some story about it being held for another customer and wouldnt let us test drive it, so we left. Its probably still there. Worst part was that we didnt just show up out of the blue, my friend had made arrangements with them to come out and test drive it.
