I have a Nissan 240sx, my car has just failed emissions. What i failed on is what is written below. I am new to this, just wondering on peoples input on this on what should i do, or if someone can help me out to get my car e-tested. :/:

Youch dude…that this is running like crap…

CO% is basically the measure of unburnt fuel. CO values typically rise when hydrocarbons are not completely combined with Oxygen during the combustion process. CO% is always an indicator of a rich condition.

You need to figure out why your car is running so rich.

I remember my S13 failed emissions, the mechanic advanced the timing or something and boom, it barely passed lol.

This is what you should have asked the first time, instead of asking for a fake E-Test.

Check/replace your cat and sensors.

check cat, o2 sensor - replace if they’re no good.

retard timing a bit more than stock if you want, this will help.

also consider dumping in some guaranteed to pass and octane booster on a full tank of 94…drive until you’ve almost used up most of the tank, then fill up a bit more 94, have the car fully warm when you go for the re-test.

also might want to check your injectors…maybe one might be stuck open or something?

if you can somehow talk to the guy testing your car beforehand, ask him for a favour. not sure how the 40kph test is done, but for the curb idle, there are a few stages and in between the stages you have a couple of seconds to blip the throttle just in case there’s anything caked inside the exhaust from the stage before. i failed my first test but after doing the curb idle trick i managed to pass… my car was with a cat only, no egr and charcoal canister, stock 20deg timing.

good luck man. definintely make sure you get some mainteance work done on your car beforehand.

you need this you need that. my god “you guys are idiots”

his motor could be all full of carbon. could be anything. suggestions are okay. comments like the above…that shit is just ridiculous.

if you can afford it. get the car checked by a tech with a scanner. if you can’t. check your basic tune up. oil changes help more than any one really realizes. continue from there.

just a tech’s $0.02

^^sorry 87s15lt1 i guess i should’ve stressed that more. the others were just simply suggestions. his car’s obviously pretty fucked though so i see what you’re saying in terms of my original reply. i agree with you 100%…the OP definitely needs someone to take a look at things.

Carb up engines run hot = failing on nox. This is a HC = unburnt fuel and CO = rich burn issue. A tune up isn’t going to fix it. What with the phase "just a tech’s $0.02??? Feel special?? Warm and fuzzy inside??? Suggestion that are wrong, is like the tech that doesn’t diag properly and wastes customers money. Retarding the timing will also not fix this issue. Retarding the timing = later burn = cooler temps = lower nox levels but higher HC’s levels due to the later burn.

JUST A TECH’S $0.02

Agreed with above^^^. You guys drive me f\*\*\*in nuts.
Why condemn every component on the car before proper diagnosis of each said component is completed. Half of those suggestions are way the hell out to lunch.
He is failing miserably on HC and CO’s. Especially CO which is evidence of extremely rich condition and incomplete combustion.
With those types of numbers do you think a catalytic converter is really to blame? The catalytic converter can only correct the exhaust emissions to a certain extent. if the pre-cat emissions are that extreme the catlytic convert will not fix anything.
That is why when you are diagnosising a cat(other then a temp test) you do precat/post cat comparisons to give an idication of how the engine is operating.
As for retarding timing/carboned up engine. Bonus points again above. Carbonization will effectively raise compression in some case/or create hot spots in others, either way resulting in higher combustion chamber temperatures creating excessive NOx readings. Retarding the timing is a “cheat” used to help lower combustion chamber temps to lower NOx.
Emissions are like a See-saw…when HC’s and CO’s are high…NOx are low…and vise versa.
The only time you ever see them fail all three is generally when a cat goes…and even then…the readings are generally just passed the limit. Not ridiculous like this guys readings.
This said case, the problem is obviously ahead of the catalytic converter(however if you dont correct it and keep running that rich it soon will be a prob lol)
Either way, dont just throw out “tech’s diag’s” and call it a day. inspect the entire car and come to an intelligent conclusion. before condemning a component, confirm that is the cause of the problem before unneeded money is spent.
Thats what gives us REAL tech’s a bad name.
Just my 0.02 from a NISSAN TECH.

Your one-ups-manship reeks of pre-treen angst against the world.

Other than that, there is some sound advice in this thread.
