# EGR Piping

EGR Piping from the manifold to the EGR… easy way to take this off? from the top? bottom?
need a little help, seems so damn hard to me…

Unless it isn’t siezed and rusted to shit, which it most likely will be, you’ll want to take off the downpipe (2-1) to do this. Unplug it from the EGR/AIV unit first, take out the unit. Then do whatever you can to get the pipe out. If it’s not coming out, plug the hole inconspicuously.

well it is rusted to shit… i havent tried approaching this from the bottom of the car yet but… the piping on there cracked right around (I can easily bend the piping wayyyyyy past the coupling point on the manifold).
i tried jbweld but its the hardest thing to get to cause as i said its cracked right around… i was hoping i wouldnt have to take off anything else =(

mine came off from the top, but it rusted off as usual so as osad said, i had to “plug the hole inconspicuously”. i would try to add some kind of penetrant for lube to the mani port for days and then heat it up like crazy and then try torquing. but then again…this is sort of how it rusted and fell off for me so i don’t know if you have much to work with. g/l.

hmm… taking off the egr is a little hard, the bolts are both under the manifold on the passenger side and towards the firewall as well… im having a hard time fitting anything in there…
any suggestions?

its just 3 12mm bolts that u got to get out … i took it off while on the car … u can do it.

do i take the 3 on the top off or where the block off plate is? im so confused lmaoo cause theres a bolt under the intake man. arms and i just cant get anything to access it…

it’s possible, i just did it last month. only problem is that you need tiny, steady, azn hands 😛 i definitely dropped a couple of tools while attempting but in the end it was possible to get the iacv and egr off with wrenches or sockets with a long extension. this is while the engine was still in the car.

actually… in this picture you can see it better,
its the leftmost bolt for the egr there. in the car that bolt is under one of the pcv “arms” and I cant get a socket nor a wrench in there.

ok i took a look at my bay today and now i remember…i had the fuel lines disconnected and the bracket on the upper mani for the fuel lines taken off so the visibility was better. i then fit a wrench through the front opening of the upper and lower mani assembly (approx where the tb is…hole should be big enough to fit your hand through but you have to lean over and fit most of your forearm inside of the two mani’s. after i seated it nicely on the bolt head and positioned the wrench pretty much parallel to the driveline, i connected another wrench onto it so i could gain leverage without having my whole forearm inside. you sort of need to guide and make sure your initial wrench is seated on the bolt head properly the whole time with like a left finger or something while you torque the 2nd connected wrench with your right hand. bottomline is you have to keep your hands steady, apply a shitload of whatever penetrant you have, and make sure you apply your torque really squarely. hope this works for you man.

yeah i went out and bought a stubby gear wrench and wrestled my arm to the bolt… got it off, drove the car to the mechanic to get the seized couplings off the old piping, reinstalled, car runs like a beaut (well, in comparison lol)
only thing is, i left the AIV (or whatever that other UFO-looking thing RIGHT next to the EGR is) off… haven’t noticed anything different from the lack of it… do I need it? am I secretly destroying my car?

i took it off too and actually used the egr section you had to take off (3 bolts) but welded a plate onto the backside of that thing to close it off. if i get a chance i’ll post a pic of what i have to give you an idea. i haven’t had any issues so far.
no you should be fine though from what you’re saying it sounds about right. emissions related hardware don’t really carry much pressure in any area so any changes to your current condition should have a negligable effect.

took a bit longer than expected. i shot the picture from the back of the engine near the firewall. this is my setup and yes, i removed the egr valve aka “ufo” and blocked it off. i welded a plate against it and my friend sealed it off with something (not sure what he used but it looks similar to caulking…probably some urethane based sealer).

oh yeah i just realized that you might’ve been talking about the other “ufo”. so there’s 2. there’s the egr valve which you removed already (and you blocked off the existing interface). and then there’s the bpt valve which has a bracket mounted on the upper mani. i believe you might’ve been talking about this “ufo”, not the egr one since you obviously blocked it already. to answer your question, yes you can leave the bpt valve out as well.
