So maybe those crazy kids buying garbage from eBay had it right? Good idea, bad execution? Audi SQ7 sounds interesting too.

> Valeo has developed an electric turbocharger that it says eliminates turbo lag.
>
> The new turbocharger is powered by an electric motor instead of exhaust gases.
>
> When not needed, the turbo’s impeller, which pumps air and fuel into the cylinders, still spins at 10,000 rpm, so there is minimal hesitation or lag in engine response when the driver presses the accelerator pedal.
>
> But there are downsides: cost and power consumption. The unit requires 48-volt power, which means additional electronics under the hood. It also is a heavy user of electricity.
>
> Still, automakers are intrigued.
>
> Audi has been testing the electric turbocharger and is expected to be first to market the device. Audi will apply an e-booster electric turbocharger to its 3.0-liter V-6 diesel engine in the Q7. This uses an electric compressor to spin up the turbocharger from very low revs to cancel out turbo lag.
>
> “The new Q7 will be in the market next year and the electric turbo will come a little later in a sporty version called SQ7,” r&d chief Ulrich Hackenberg said at press event last month in Denmark. He did not say which supplier would provide the e-turbocharger.
>
> Mercedes-Benz r&d chief Thomas Weber says the technology is relevant and a valid option when mated to 48-volt or higher voltage systems. “It is a real alternative to two-stage turbocharging,” he said.
>
> Two-stage turbos use two fans – one for low speeds, another for high speeds.
>
> BMW engine development manager Nikolai Ardey says the company is studying the technology but is looking at alternatives as well.
>
> A powertrain expert at General Motors described the technology as “very interesting” and “under study.”
>
> Valeo says the electric turbocharger can reduce fuel consumption by between 7 and 20 percent.
>
> Curt Estes, Valeo’s regional operations director of powertrain systems, said 20 percent reduction is possible when the device is used on a vehicle equipped with regenerative braking, which captures the car’s kinetic energy and turns it into electricity
> Valeo’s electric turbo: Minimal lag when driver hits the accelerator
>
> Valeo calls the device an electric supercharger. But a supercharger is driven mechanically by the engine and uses rotors rather than an impeller to pressurize the engine’s cylinders.
>
> Ever since GM pioneered the use of the turbocharger on a regular production car with the 1962 Chevrolet Corvair, engineers have been improving the device.
>
> Packing more fuel and air into the cylinders enables the engine to increase its power output. But the turbocharger’s drawback is that the engine has to work harder to expel exhaust gases. And there is usually a lag between the time the turbocharger spools up and when the driver feels the rush of the additional power.
>
> Valeo’s Estes says the powerful electric motor can spool up the impeller to 70,000 rpm in less than a second, which eliminates turbo lag.

“Curt Estes, Valeo’s regional operations director of powertrain systems, said 20 percent reduction is possible when the device is used on a vehicle equipped with regenerative braking, which captures the car’s kinetic energy and turns it into electricity”

Thus essentially it’ll work great on a Hybrid vehicle which has the massive electrical system already; but for a normal vehicle it’s not a good fit/idea.

Interesting technology though, wonder what they’re using for a geartrain to get those speeds/torque out of it; I mean to accelerate that turbine blade to 7k rpm in less than a second is some serious inrush current and voltage.

How about using that electricity to produce hydrogen instead? Oh wait OPEC would not allow that. 😉

Why not change the entire vehicle to 48v? It just seems to make sense when cars have so much eletronics on board. Smaller wire would reduce wire cost slightly and weight a tiny bit

Subaru pro-typed a system like this, but there is an exhaust driven generator with a separate battery and electronics to power it. Maybe they’re going the same route?

Really? It seems to me like a good way to store energy. The disadvantages might be the weight of the battery, and the slight inefficiencies of the electric motors.

what does not make sense is using the exhaust to charge and a electric motor to drive a turbo. What would make sense is a system like BMW was developing where the center section of the turbo was the charging system for the car. Couple that with the ability to eliminate lag and you are onto something.

Bump:

> Garrett isn’t yet announcing what manufacturer or engine type its e-turbo will be used on in 2021. So far none of the other turbocharger manufacturers have announced specific production launches, but it wouldn’t be surprising if one or more arrive in a similar time frame to Garrett’s launch program or soon after.
