My car has been throwing PO440 and PO442 for a while now.
2001 cavalier

I tried a different gas cap, replaced the purge solenoid, checked the wiring to that solenoid.

Then discovered that there was a crack in a plastic insert that is in the gas filler neck.
I also found a vac leak that I fixed.

Any thoughts?
How does a mechanic do a smoke test… That test sounds like a scam.

Just have someone with HP tuners tune out the codes and give your car a good tune.

A smoke test is real and well show any leak points.

Give LZ $150 and he can turn off all the codes you want, advance your timing some and if it is an auto raise your shift points and pressure a little. Then you can block off all your evap, egr, air pump, emissions b/s. Then you can cut off your cat, weld in a straight pipe and get $50 for it at the junk yard. You’ll probably see better fuel economy if you keep your foot out of it too.

Meh… Thats $150 that could go towards a neat tool

It’s also started ticking as of late. I will have to check on the alternator and etc… in the hopes I have not spun another bearing.

LoL Then spend $650 so your $2000 car can pass inspection.

FYI I usually charge $200 for basic tunes and I’ve done ~16-20 in the past two years.

HP Tuners - [http://www.hptuners.com/](http://www.hptuners.com/)

You can leave all the DTC error codes on but set not to report so all your crap will pass for NYS inspection.

HP Tuners can literally change 95% of what your ECU controls. Timing, fuel, sensors, shift points, line pressure, idle, torque management, CAGS, etc.

As LZ mentioned anything that causes your CEL to come on can be eliminated so your car can pass inspection unless they do a visual and notice no erg, air pump, cats, etc.

As always this is for off-road use ONLY. LoL

You’ve had this problem for a while and you’ve already replaced a gas cap and a solenoid.

A smoke test would have revealed where the leak(s) is/are in a matter of minutes rather than you hunting around for hours and replacing parts that may be totally fine.

I’d say that’s pretty much the opposite of a scam. 😉 Our smoke tester is one of my favorite tools because we can find and fix most evap issues in short order and save people money they’d otherwise spend replacing parts that could be totally fine. You could have a loose clamp or a $5 hose causing the whole issue.

HP tuners can fix all of that too!

but on a serious note to those familiar with hp tuners: for a non-gm ls swapped vehicle is hp tuners the way to go? mega squirt? whats drew using?

If you are doing a Non-Gm car with a LS swap I’d use the wiring harness and ECU out of a truck. The truck ecu is just as tunable as any cars so it is a cheap fairly easy way to run a ls in any car.
