# Exhaust Shields? Burnt bumper...

I have a tanabe (concept blue G) TBE on my WRX. The car is in paint right now (bumpers and door) and Im looking for a solution to keep my white rear bumper cover from getting burnt/discolored from the catless/up&downpiped 3.25" TBE. I dont burt oil whatsoever but the exhaust set up Im running now produces a noticeable amount of soot which collects on the rear bumper.
- “WinterMode” and obviously dirty \*
Some options Ive looked into :
.: Aftermarket exhaust shield (over priced/not a fan of matte or c/f)
.: [Fab.ed aluminum sheet riveted to bumper](http://img.alibaba.com/photo/50606708/Aluminum_Sheet_for_Curtain_Wall.jpg)
.: Clamp-on turndown or tip extender (rather not quiet the exhaust or change appearance)
- Is there anywhere that would custom weld/fab a clamp-on turndown that wouldnt be permanent addition to my exhaust ? \*
Honestly just looking for some feedback…what would you do? - thanks guys

what about having one of the local welding experts extend the exhaust an inch or so?

I have the “titanium blue’d” tip that Id rather not cover up…and I like how the 4" tip looks proportional/not ricey and is much more flush and tasteful than hanging cans. I just get nervous with welding something up to my $1,200 exhaust !

Do you think that would look half-assed/stupid? I want to keep it clean so am I safe using aluminum sheets and aluminum rivets or would stainless steel be a better idea? If I had to make a decision right now it would be to do it though…Im confident it will be done right - i just need to be sure it wont rust and reck the bumper again.

As everyone said the key to not melting your bumper is to extend the tip. Have someone weld a couple inches of piping before the exhaust canister. Longer hangers won’t do it and the various shields that fit over the bumper right above the exhaust tip just look gay.

this is exactly what I meant. cut exhaust before muffler, weld in desired length, move hangers… done.
extending just the tip is super gay

Agreed…Sounds like a good idea to extend behind the canister but i dont know how it could be done.
I think Id run into fitment problems…As you see in the first picture on this thread, there really is no room for extension due to the two piece design. If I extend the midpipe, the whole axle-back would have to move and the curve of the 3"+ piping wouldnt fit.

I want to find out if its possible to weld up a turn-down that I can clamp on to the current tip. I dont want a swooping downward one piece “walmart” looking thing though…It would have to be welded like this…A series of pieces welded together simillar to the bend before the tip shown on this JIC piece :tong

I’m no welder, but the easiest place to extend looks to be the straight part of the axle back. the hangers would have to be relocated, but thats no big deal… I think.

Or I could make you one…like I did for this Porsche RSA yesterday…4043 alumin 1/8" plate, annealed and then heat treated after forming. Backed with DEI heat tape. Held in place on this car via stainless countersunk cap srews and ny-lock nuts. Completely hand formed per car, no mass produced piece of crap. Not cheap, but find me something custom that isn’t.

How much (est.) including installation? It would have to come up a little higher on the rear bumper but might not look too bad…

…JIC 996 Biturbo exhaust…hardcore stuff right there. I weld stuff like that all the time for the Porsches. Turndown may solve the soot issue, but wont solve any radiant heat issue that melts bumpers. Happens all the time on the cups, most end up getting a airsaw to the tip cutout to remove the melted bumper that collapses and touches the tip(which = FIRE on these cars)

i wax my rear bumper above the exhaust once a week. My car isnt my daily driver, but when i park it i just use a microfiber and wipe the rear bumper down. the Wax + microfiber keeps it white, and it takes like 3 seconds… and costs nothing.
