# Exterminators

Can anyone recommend a good exterminator? I have black ants in the house. I have tried the over the counter crap and it doesnt seem to do much. I kill about 3 or 4 a day in the house and im sick of dealing with it.

Geez I called a few places, and it seems like they all charge about $400+ for a treatment for carpenter ants. Seems awful expensive to just spray some chemicals around the house.

That’s because carpenter ants are a hearty species of ant. Most ants you can eliminate from the house with spray chemicals or traps, but with carpenter ants, once they are INSIDE the house, they are impossible to “trap”. Mainly because the nests are found outside and they have found an entrance inside the house.

Well if the nests are on the outside how hard is it to spray chemicals around the house so they cant come in? Seems like about a 15-30 min job tops to spray the perimeter of the house. I cant see paying $400 bucks for that. If they did some in depth evaluation of my house to find nests and such is the only way I could see charging that amount.

Spraying the perimeter with a product like Ortho Home Defense or Spectricide Ant Shield won’t stop them once they have found an entrance. If you read the back of the label, it says it doesn’t work for several types of ants, carpenter ants included.
What happens is once they enter the house, they mark their trail and they start to “nest” in cool, dark areas of the house. The spray product just deters them from entering the house initially, not to stop them from entering after.

You see just 3-4 ants a day? Maybe it’s just me, but I wouldn’t really call that a problem worth calling an exterminator for. I get ants every spring. I just have to be religious about emptying the trash and doing the dishes right away and they go away.
Unless you meant you kill 3-4 ant traps a day. That sounds like a problem worth addressing.
Just my opinion. Take it with a grain of salt. :shrug:

This area of WNY is notorious for carpenter ants, thing is…if you call an exterminator, yes it will kill the ants inside the house but you need to find their entrance and block it. The most common spots are through basement windows, cracks in foundation, underneath loose siding or underneath the bases of improperly cut door bottoms.

Get that. It’s illegal in NY because as with most things, NY is a nanny state and can’t trust you not to eat it or let your kids eat it. So the only chems you can buy in store are so weak they do basically nothing.
The trick is you have to start letting the ants you see live. They take the bait back to the nest and the delayed kill action kills them all. The big thing is making sure you place the bait on non-permeable holders so it doesn’t get absorbed (no paper plates etc) and make sure it goes in areas of high traffic.
Look around in your basement and attic for any signs of sawdust. That’s from the carpenter ants burrowing in your wood. Anywhere you find that is a great place to put bait, as well as in and around your kitchen.

How did this turn out. Spring is here and I have seen a few. Good riddance wants $340 to come spray 2x with a 90 day warranty

I still swear by this stuff. My mom had ants the first spring in her new place. Tried some crap the guy at home depot recommended and all it seemed to do was feed the ants. Put down some maxforce gel in places where she had been seeing ants in a little over a week they were gone.
Again, you won’t be buying this locally because NYS has decided you can’t be trusted with real pest control chemicals. The active ingredient is Fipronil and it’s nasty stuff. It’s been banned in some countries. But if you’re careful with it and don’t eat it you’re fine.

I worked for buffalo exterminating for a while. very good reliable honest company.
(that being said PM me and i can come out to your house and check out your situation. DO NOT IGNORE THE PROBLEM IF THEY ARE IN YOUR HOUSE YOU HAVE A NEST SOMEWHERE IN YOUR HOUSE)
also dont waste money on over the counter stuff, i have the legit commercial powder you need to have a license to apply,only stuff that really works and will prevent other ants from overtaking the nest once the current ants are dusted out
