# Fee for switching plates?

Ok so I want to switch my plates to my other car. Both cars have a legal and up to date registration, I just want the DMV to recognize the plates as a different car. Is there any kind of fee for this? Any info would be appreciated.

If both cars are reg’d why do you want to swap plates?

I only have one set of plates. The other car is off the road. It still has the registration sticker from when I had it on the road last, so I just want to put it back on the road without having to re-register it and purchase new plates.

there is no fees, just call your insurance and notify them.

Put the new car on your policy, go to the DMV and fill out a plate transfer. Iirc it is $7.50 to transfer plates

When you pay for a reg, it’s good for 2 years. If you swap plates to the other car, that car will get the remaining time from that reg. So if the car is already titled to you and there’s time left on the reg, it will hardly cost anything.

one thing i dont understand is if you have two cars and both are a few months in out of the 2 years on their reg. normally you would eligible for the refund for the remaining time left on both cars, but they only refund for one car when you terminate the plate.

I’m kind of confused by what you mean but when I terminated the plates they didn’t give me a refund, instead they gave me a “credit” towards my next registration or something.
