When I was getting treatment at Roswell, the same day I met with my doctor, they had me meet with a social worker. Granted I was able to keep Cobra and pay to continue to have health insurance, they did have some options to help me pay for my medical treatment, etc. I didn’t need to take up on any of the programs, but you should look into that.
It’s bad enough that you have to go through cancer treatment, but it’s worse when you can’t afford anything outside of that. All I can say is ask questions while you are there and explain your situation. They are there to help.

Do it. I am researching positions in Kenmore, Tonawanda area. I’m honestly sick of the political BS that is going on and I would like to try and see if I can make at least a dent in the standstill in any progress NYS has.
There are a ton of creative, innovative people in WNY, and even on this board. A lot of go-getters. How do we fully utilize them as resources to try and turn around WNY and make it a place people want to live in?

My biggest obstical with getting aide is the state. If i get too much help from Roswell or Lymphoma & Lukemia Society, they will take away my Medicaide because Im receiving too much. They count the finacial assistance programs as income for some stupid reason. Thats why all the Benefit money has to be kept in its own “Benefit” accound and all bills paid from it (like my car insurance, rent, ect) has to be done by proxy, so they can not prove that I actually have the money. I hate the way it works. I was just scraping by with the unemployment, and dissability is taking forever because the state doesnt even have the money to pay out for it.

This is the problem with whole system…you need it and can’t get it.
Other people get it and don’t need it. I say just burn NY down and start over.

I have an idea. How about a city income tax for Buffalo. The money could go directly to help stamp out poverty and would make the wealthy elite pay for it. If you are working - you pay. If you are not working - you collect benefits. You know, spread the wealth around. Works for me.

all you guys saying buffalo should be some bastion of commerce need to acknowledge the elephant in the room. The weather here is horrible and even a lot of life long buffalonians cant stand it.
ever try walking thru niagara square in the winter? its cold as fuck and the windiest place on the planet. We have (referencing a recent thread) more cloud covered/rainy days than seattle, which is known for that nationally.
Now dont get me wrong i love the area and the city especially being a huge architecture/history buff but we just dont have what it takes to compete with other cities, especially southern ones or cities in states with low taxes

The weather is not the biggest problem. It would be a lot better if the state we where in did not suck ass (mostly your wallet) so bad. Most people move out of here because it is so much cheaper to live somewhere else on the same income. The money we pay in taxes alone is retarded compared to other, similar citys such as Greenville, SC. The weather just adds to the excuse to leave. Honestly, the only real bad part of our seasons is winter and the evil “lake effect”.

I guess people have become pussies. Buffalo was one of the richest most successful cities on the planet long before Gor-Tex and Polar fleece. lol

You can’t blame the weather. It’s been like that forever. Buffalo was the place to live at one time. Politics and upstae basically fucked it for us.
Buffalo has to potential to be great once again. But the thing is, not enough people are fighting to make those changes for the better.
People actually like cold weather. Look at how many people ski, play ice hockey, snowmobile, etc… Can’t do that in South Carolina…
There are too many old people with closed minds in office that are out there more for padding their own wallet then for trying to make this area a better place. I don’t want Buffalo to get anywhere like Detroit is, but we are only 2 spots behind them on the list.
Like I mentioned previous, we need to get more creative, younger, fresher people and ideas in positions of power and try to actually improve the area.

There is on big problem with your plan to turn the area around through better local government, and that problem is STATE MANDATES.
No matter who you elect for town/city/county government posts they still have to provide all these services at state mandated levels. Even if you elect new local representatives for the state positions it doesn’t matter because Albany is controlled by one man, Sheldon Silver. No one but his lower Manhattan 64th district people get to vote for or against him so 99% of the state gets no representation.
At least the senate passed new rules during that whole coup debacle allowing bills to be put up for a vote without needing the majority leader approval.
The only way NY will ever start to recover is if someone kills Silver and makes sure his replacement knows he will meet the same fate unless he stops blocking the state government reform that the people are demanding.

Lets not forget which way most all government job holders will vote. Every Cop, Mailman and Teacher is voting in their best interest too, and thats a buttload of people. Luckily theyre more educated people so hopefully they can see where this areas headed and help make a change soon.

buffalo was at the height of its relevance when the erie canal was a primary means of conveyance for commercial goods. the railroads and eventually airlines made having access to waterfront virtually irrelevant.
i don’t see buffalo returning to it’s previous glory by any stretch of the imagination.
don’t get me wrong, the nys and local government bs doesn’t help, but that’s what started it.
