Currently I have a Napolean GDS50…
[http://www.napoleonfireplaces.com/Stoves/stoves\_gas/gds50.html](http://www.napoleonfireplaces.com/Stoves/stoves_gas/gds50.html)
On the info I have, it lists it as 76% AFUE max efficiency

Is switching over to a vent free set up actually possible? I do realize they say they are not ideal for whole house heating… but if I am preventing 1/4 of my money from floating out the chimney…
I am also running Propane as NG isn’t available in my area. So I pay a bit more per btu than NG.

I’m thinking of something along the lines of this…
[http://www.heater-store.com/procom\_ml300tba\_vent\_free\_liquid\_propane\_convection\_heater\_2738\_prd1.htm](http://www.heater-store.com/procom_ml300tba_vent_free_liquid_propane_convection_heater_2738_prd1.htm)

Or any similar item HD/Lowes sells.
The home is 792sq/ft.
I do understand vent free heating will produce more moisture in the air, which since it’s typically very dry in the winter I don’t think that will be too much of a problem. Although I’m not totally sure how often the vent free will be on as you have to light most manually from what I’ve seen.

Is this a terribly shitty idea? Or is there just not enough oxygen available in a typical home?
I know it’s horribly, horribly insulated (4" of insul in teh attic with none in walls/floor) with leaks everywhere. Their bills last year were around $150-170/mo with the napolean heater.
I’ve gutted the kitchen/bath this year and got everything insulated there with new windows and such, so that will help some…

But yes yes… back to teh topic!
Vent free as a main heating source? Or is that just stupid.

edit;

tstat… electric ignition… yes?

I’ve never had or experienced a ventless that didn’t make me sick.

Ventless are garbage if you ask me. The fumes are discusting, no better than blasting a torpedo heater inside.

I know of 2 people that used wall mount ventless heaters, the fumes made your eyes water and ruin paint over time.

I have a blue flame heater similar to the one you are looking at for propane, I will sell it to ya if ya want for $150, its never used in the box just opened.

:word: I have to agree. I had a propane heater in my old garage with less than ideal insulation and it would make me sick/ choke me out to the point of opening that main door and venting the entire place just to reheat it.
This is not something I recommend, ESPECIALLY if you have kids.

+1 to this. The garage gets up to about 80 then I have to drop it to 45 just to breathe some fume free air and not puke.

lol gotcha.
when i used to use my parents garage all the time I used a ventless torpedo heater and I didn’t mind it at all, minus everything getting all wet.
but i guess I forgot about the kitties too! I doubt they would enjoy it.
thanks :o
