I’ve seen a few pictures like this of FWD drag cars with the engine rotated apparently at the axles in order to get more weight forward of them.

I’m just curious as to what kind of supporting mods are required for something like this. I assume a dry sump pump since the oil pickup/pan would be messed up. Anything else? Due to the vacuum the motor has I assume it wouldn’t matter if the fuel injectors were pointed up or down since theyre not gravity fed… right?

though im not 100 percent sure on this i think a custom oil pan would suffice and the injectors shouldnt be a prob ,obv motor mnt would need to be custom as wit tranny mnt,s

What Im thinking is:
Is it really that simple? It seems way too easy, why wouldn’t more FWD drag cars do it?

Class restriction on chassis modification and design, overall packaging and weight transfer/balance. lot’s of reason why, and just as many for why not 🙂

but yea, if you could manage to properly scavenge the oil from the case you could run a motor completely inverted.

Dry sump system with vacuum scavenge air/oil separation is the big key to doing it.

Need some billet mike 😉

forgot to add…MAJOR reason why this is done in some chassis is CG of the drive train itself…you can effectively lower the CG of the drivetrain by that rotation and still maintain proper halfshaft and CV alignment, as you’re rotating it along the axis of the gearbox output shafts/flanges whereas just dropping the drive train straight down in the chassis would induce bad halfshaft geometry and loading forces on the suspension that affect affect traction.

there is quite a bit of engineering behind something as simple as a motor position or angle 🙂

The “Red Sled” has its motor tilted forwards as well, I was wondering about that…

Wouldn’t having the motor tilted at such and angle as on the drag car cause premature cylinder wall wear on the lower side. I mean the laws of gravity say that the piston is going to be pulled down onto that lower side of the cylinder.

Probly not a big issue on drag cars since they tear down their motors after every event but something to consider

Nope, due to cyclic forces and the physics that happen inside a cylinder. Also due to more collective oil file at the bottom of the cylinder. If that was the case, boxer motors would never survive yet they’re one of the most durable engines around. I’ve rebuilt Porsche engines with over 150K miles on them and in some cases reused the pistons and cylinders as they had virtual zero wear 🙂
