Saw this awesome video of how a company called Euclideon is using atoms instead of polygons to create the highest level of graphic detail in gaming.

only downfall is file sizes, i have a point cloud data file for a job site that is less than .5 square miles and its just enough data to make out shapes not anywhere near a gaming level of detail and it is over 30 GB and a bitch to load lol

Yea there obviously still in the prototype stages still but this will become huge if they figure out the roadblocks. I’m wondering if they have a patent on this technology because i’m shocked no other huge gaming company has tried this.

its funny that you posted this because when we first got the point cloud data we were talking about the potential for this tech in gaming, it only cost the client 30 grand to have a point cloud scan done of the site and it wouldve saved a fuckload of time if they coughed it up a while ago, but for the gaming industry what is 30 grand? nothing when you take into consideration the return on that investment, you could go anywhere you want and say, “this would be an awesome map for whatever game” and for 30,000 it would be 80% ready to go.

I know they’ve been trying to use atom/nuclear technology in computer systems. Eventually disk hard drives will be fully replaced with ssd’s flash memory. Really is always comes down to is it cost effective. But your right $30k in the gaming world is peanuts

And like the CEO in the vid said they are a tech company not artists so this technology in the hands of some great gaming artists would be interesting to see
