Sweet. I’ll bring the beer.

You’ll be able to do all watersports except pull a fatty out of the water on a slalom ski. Tubes, wakeboards, kneeboards no problem.

I’ve had double wakeboarders behind mine actually.

PS… watch your ass with beer on the boat. Canada has open container laws so it doesn’t matter that the driver is stone cold sober. The penalties are SEVERE… like lose your boat severe. And the border is a little crazy since there are spots where you can be 100 feet from Grand Island and actually be in Canada.

Canada is nuts with all kinds of marine laws. They stopped my dad’s friend for something when we were out together and they actually had the power to seize his boat, trailer, and the truck he was pulling it with :jawdrop:

I could never get a straight answer about if they consider an empty an “open container” either. I asked two different times when we were stopped for routine safety checks and got nothing but attitude. So, despite not liking to litter, we sink our empties in deep water while still in the US. I feel bad every time I do it but I’m not getting my boat confiscated because some Canadian sea pig finds an empty beer bottle and me with a .01% BAC.

I was stopped once in the lower with a cooler full of beer on the Canadian side and the guy gives me all this attitude and goes, “And where do you think you’ll be drinking that, it’s illegal to be drinking on the boat”. I point to the opposite side of the river and go, “Right over there, where it’s not illegal to be drinking on the boat”. He wasn’t happy but couldn’t do shit.

> To pass a safety check in the US and Canada I **think** you need (I say I think because I’m doing this from memory, you can look it up to verify):
> Life jackets for everyone on board. Have to be age/weight appropriate.
> An approved **and accessible** throwable life preserver (floatation cushion, life ring etc).
> An audible distress signal (horn on the boat, air horn, whistle).
> A visual distress signal (approved flares).
> A waterproof flashlight (Canada reg, not US).
> A manual bailing device. I don’t keep a bucket and just tell them I’ll use my tacklebox if need be.
> An oil absorbent cloth for the bildge in case you spill oil. This one I didn’t know last year when I got stopped, but quick thinking on my part got me out of a ticket when I told the Coastie I’d use my t-shirt if I had to.
> A functional flame arrestor on top of the carb/intake.
> A fire extinquisher.
> A working blower for the engine compartment.
> An anchor and 3 times the rope for the water you’ll be in. They’re a little flexible on this one. I’ve got 50’ of line, plus 75’ of ski-rope I could tie on if needed and they’ve never hassled me on it. They don’t expect you to carry 600’ of line because you’re in a 200’ deep section of the lower Niagara.
>
> That’s what I can think of off the top of my head. If I was standing on my boat looking around I might think of a couple more.

Hopefully they go over this stuff in a safety course, because I’m seeing NYS laws that say you don’t need life preservers for anyone over 12 and you don’t need safety equipment like life savers and throw lines and whatnot.

You definitely need life preservers for everyone on board, as well as flares, and a horn, etc…

I’ve pulled and hassled over this SOO many times.

A mouth whistle is an acceptable alternative on boats 39 feet long or less.

Lets see why they say boating is expensive. Prices from CME on Hertel:
1 PFD, throw ring - $47
6 PFD, vests - $42
3 Flares - $22
1 Fire Extinguisher - $15
1 Anchor with 4’ chain and 100’ line - $60
1 Mouth Whistle - $7

Total to meet NYS Safety req’s: $193.

It’s got a fire extinguisher, I’m sure I could find a whistle laying around somewhere, and I bet I can find a cheaper throwable PFD. So I could probably knock that down to about $160.

Then I’m still going to want to get a hook/oar combo +$30, 2 bumpers +$20, 3 dock lines for my father-in-law’s dock $40.

So up to $250. That cassette deck head unit has to go, so +$100. And +$50 for a fishing pole and a few lures.

$400 to get started. :awdrifter: Then another hundo for gas, and $7.99 for a case of Genny Lite.

$507.99.

See if Boat Cushions count as throwable PFD…they are fairly cheap.
And they are also nice to sit on and float with a beer in your hand.
