My issue is still that your propaganda and the propaganda links you supply are all benefiting from the drilling… big $$$$. It’s easy to buy in to the hype from an employee/owner perspective when you can benefit greatly from it. Corporate kool-aide. I’m sure most working for BP could cite all the benefits of drilling oil in the gulf, and cite statistics before the rig went down that what happened “couldn’t ever happen”. History shows in many endevours that corporate greed will outweigh truth and ethics in the long run. Whether this will be one of those times, remains to be seen. I don’t doubt your company or especially you are in it for good reasons. I do doubt that every other company doing this is. There is too much money at the end of the rainbow for someone to NOT corrupt the system and get away with what they can in order to maximize profits.
> The sad thing is that this falls on easy prey. There aren’t many people throughout the region who would turn their head to the kind of money they can make from, in their minds, doing nothing but signing the papers.

So we’re back to “the big evil oil companies are evil and as such, must be up to something nefarious”?

You think that the BP accident in the gulf is because BP as a company just didn’t give a fuck? Do you have any idea how much they spend in liability reduction? TONS. Why? Because if something like this happens, it could cost them their company… and with BP, it nearly did. If their stock had slid a bit more it was almost certain that they would have been swallowed up by some other company. And now they are on the hook for $20 billion. CEO got shitcanned.

But I agree, these big corps only care about one thing… Money. There needs to be strict regulations, and the regulations are already pretty strict. When people aren’t cutting corners, bad accidents are VERY rare. If people play by the rules, we’re not going to have a problem. DEP has hired a TON of new employees to ensure this is going to happen.

Are there risks? Yes. Are there concerns? Yes. Can this be done safely enough to be worth the risks? Absolutely. Especially when considering our only other option is coal, which we already know totally ruins the environment.
