Your bolt will most likely be in single shear which will deflect some which will induce off axis loads to peel the bearing out of the bore eventually. Plus if its not 100% aligned with the chain it will add another place for it to deflect.

Just think about everything before you head down the road. A loose chain at 60 mph will not be a good thing.

Yeah. You know, similar to the millions of other idler sprockets with pressed in bearings on the market.

If you buy an idler from McMaster it’s exactly this. A sprocket with a machined bore with a bearing pressed in…

OH

I could post 1000 more. How much load do you think a chain tensioner even SEES?

Nick if you’re even slightly concerned, put the lip to the inside. Then the only way it can move is toward the frame.

Yea, I guess there isn’t that much tension on a street bike chain, but it’s more the vibrations I’m worried about.

yeah I was planning to put the lip to the inside anyways…and for what it’s worth, if this didn’t work I was going to but this idler from Erik Buell Racing (meant for belt to chain conversions on firebolts for track duty) and find something to make a 17mm shaft for (I emailed asking shaft size and tooth count before getting a bearing that would work with the sprocket I already have)
