# Home windmill design Poll. Help me out.

The task in my design class is to design an At home green energy system to reduce utility cost for an average home owner. So we are designing two components.
1. is a Solar shingle. Essentially a photovoltaic cell that resembles a normal roof shingle to be less visually obtrusive.
2. A wind turbine that can be mounted to a rooftop, or pole in the yard that will efficiently produce wind power and still look good.
What I would like from you guys is simply based on ESTHETICS. Nothing else. If you were in the market for a windmill, which of these types of designs would you prefer. Again, neglect the efficieny possibilities for now, and go based purely on which one looks better to you.
I have a few haggard sketches so I’m using random pics for general design ideas. It will tell me what I need to know without having to show the sketches we do have. If I have time I will put those up later on.
A) Traditional Design. Horizontal axis with tail.
B) Vertical axis, wide spread.
C) Vertical Axis, nearly enclosed design. (obv not to be the size of a building. Just showing the design here.)
D) Vertical Axis, open design.
E) Horizontal Axis, Loop blade design
Consider if you were to have this on your roof. Or what you would think if your neighbor were to mount one on his.

B, because I belive they are best suited to small installations (noise, cost, watts per mph etc).
If I’m wrong about that, which ever one is best suited based on the criteria I listed, in that order.

E did not load, but I would go with C as well. It does not give the impression of a radar or something crazy (so people wont think your :snky: ) but just some weird object on your roof related to some sort of home functionality.

Dude, rednecks put little mockups of these things in their yards and gardens all the time purely because they like the nostalgia of the way they look. Design one that looks like a lawn ornament, but actually generates electricity!

The image for “E” is not showing up…so based on the ones I can see my vote goes to “D”. I like how minimalistic and unconventional it is.
I’d also like to see the sketches…I’m a designer myself and always find interest in these:)

the best ones I have seen/heard about are like style D but with more blades and thinner. It basically looked like a twisted PVC tube and was about 4 ft tall and maybe 1 ft wide or slightly narrower.

Fry - the problem there is that these are targeted to urban areas as well. Not just rural.
I’m already seeing that people would be more worried about that their neighbors think rather then their own personal taste. Hmmm…
